The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack has introduced new generations to classic N64 games. Subscribers can access a library of emulated N64 titles, meaning retro racing game fans can relive the iconic Mario Kart 64 on the go.
After Wave Race 64 recently made a splash on Nintendo’s hybrid console, Excitebike 64 is the next N64 racing game coming to Nintendo Switch.
Excitebike 64 coming to Nintendo Switch
As well as previewing two new tracks in the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass, Nintendo announced Excitebike is coming to Nintendo Switch in September’s Nintendo Direct Show – although the Goldeneye 007 Switch port undoubtedly stole the show.
A brief clip of Excitebike 64 in a showreel of upcoming N64 titles coming to Switch shows a rider jumping over a moving train on a dirt bike.
A sequel to the original 1984 Excitebike 2D NES game, Excitebike 64 was originally released on Nintendo 64 in 2000. Like the first game, you race on dirt bikes, jump over ramps, and perform gnarly tricks.
Notably, Excitebike 64 is the first game in the series with 3D graphics, though its main selling point was an advanced track editor allowing players to create their own custom courses.
Excitebike 64 also introduced Stunt Course, Hill Climb, and Soccer mini-games. These modes should carry over to the Switch port, but it remains to be seen if there will be any modern enhancements like online multiplayer.
Excitebike 64 also featured four-split screen multiplayer on N64, but Nintendo hasn't confirmed if this mode will be in the Switch game.
Excitebike 64 joins an assortment of N64 racing games playable on Nintendo Switch via the Online Expansion Pack subscription including Mario Kart 64, F-Zero X, and Wave Race 64. We’re still waiting for Diddy Kong Racing, Nintendo.
Release date
The Switch version of Excitebike 64 doesn’t have an exact release date, but Nintendo confirmed it will arrive sometime in 2023.
