Forza Horizon 5: why we're hyped for the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE

The Mercedes-AMG Project ONE has featured heavily in the trailer for Forza Horizon 5. We're looking forward to getting behind the wheel of the world's ultimate hypercar.

The Forza series features many quick cars. But are any as extreme as the Project ONE?

Project ONE has F1 pedigree

Mercedes-AMG have dominated the turbo-hybrid era of Formula One, taking every drivers' and constructors' crown from 2014 onwards. Now the three-pointed star marque have decided to celebrate this success with a road car.

Forza Horizon 5 will feature the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE

The Mercedes-AMG Project ONE borrows technology directly from the F1 team and is developed with the help of the seven-time champ, Sir Lewis Hamilton.

Racing powertrain on the road

The very 1.6 litre V6 turbo-hybrid from the all-conquering Mercedes F1 W07 Hybrid will power this awesome machine.

The W07 took a scarecely believable 19 wins and 20 pole positions from 21 races in 2016. 275 lucky owners, having stumped up the $2.72 million asking price, will get to use this power on the road.

Soon, Forza Horizon 5 players will experience this acceleration in-game, expected to be under 11 seconds to 300 km/h.

The Mercedes-AMG Project ONE engine in detail

For legality and reliability reasons, Mercedes have limited the PU106C internal combustion engine to 11,000 rpm. It will still need a full refurbishment every 50,000 km and produce 748 hp. This is far from your average 1.6 litre ICE!

Coupled to this mighty motor will be four electric motors. As at the Grand Prix, there will be an MGU-K on the crankshaft and an MGU-H on the turbocharger. Two electric motors coupled to the front axle make this car four wheel drive when engaged.

The electric motors add an extra 603 hp to the power output of the Project ONE, for a total of 1231 horsepower.

Engine swaps

Forza Horizon players will be well aware that the game allows replacing the engine of the cars in your garage. We can't help but wonder what crazy creations this powertrain will enable in Forza Horizon 5.

Indeed some builds already cause cars to wheelie and accelerate at seemingly impossible rates. For instance, what would the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE power unit do to a Peel P50?
