Since the series’ inception 25 years ago, Gran Turismo has become one of the PlayStation’s most popular franchises. Couple this with the fact that
Gran Turismo 7 is the first mainline entry in nine years, and GT7 was always going to be a smash hit.
In the UK, GT7 raced to number one in the physical game charts. But now we’re getting a clearer idea of how GT7 is performing worldwide.
Second best-selling US game in March
According to chart data compiled by NPD, Gran Turismo 7 was the second best-selling game across all formats in March 2022, falling behind Elden Ring.
It was also the second best-selling game on PlayStation the same month behind Elden Ring. This data includes physical and digital copies of GT7.
This is already an impressive achievement, but NPD analyst and advisor Mat Piscatella also confirmed GT7 had the biggest US launch month in the franchise’s history, setting a new launch revenue record.
Overall, GT7 was the fourth best-selling game in the US during the first quarter of 2022 according to NPD, behind Horizon Forbidden West, Pokémon Legends Arceus, and Elden Ring.
Worldwide sales
As reported by GTPlanet, GT7 topped the UK boxed game charts every week in March ahead of Elden Ring and WWE 2K22. It was also in the top ten digital sales charts throughout March. In Germany, GT7 was March’s best selling game ahead of Elden Ring and Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
Across Europe, GT7 placed either number one or in the top three sales charts across all platforms through March in Spain, Italy, France, and Belgium.
Sony also announced GT7 was the most downloaded PS5 game in Europe last month and the second most downloaded PS5 game in the US and Canada behind Elden Ring. On PS4, GT7 was March’s second most downloaded game in Europe and the third most downloaded game in the US and Canada.
Exact sales figures aren’t available yet, though Famitsu estimates GT7 sold around 198,000 copies in Japan last month, beating Elden Ring’s 163,000 sales.
For comparison, GT Sport sold just under 170,000 copies in the first month of sales in November 2017. GTPlanet estimates GT7 may have sold over two million copies worldwide if Japan’s sales alone are anything to go by.
Early indications show that GT7 is already a smash hit worldwide, and we expect sales to increase when PlayStation 5 consoles become more widely available.
It will be interesting to see where GT7 ranks in the best-selling GT games. In case you’re wondering, 2001’s Gran Turismo 3 with 14.89 copies sold worldwide.
