Thanks to its adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, the PS5 DualSense controller can be an asset for racing games, offering extra feedback. Gran Turismo 7 was a great showcase of how the DualSense controller can make racing games more engaging.
F1 2021’s DualSense support left a lot to be desired, but F1 22 will make full use of the controller’s innovative technology. In a post on the PlayStation Blog, F1 22’s Senior Game Designer Steven Embling explains how F1 22 will utilise the PS5 DualSense controller.

Haptic Feedback
Haptic feedback will enhance the feeling of collisions and surfaces, communicating individual chunks of surface debris. This feedback will be sent to the left or right side of the controller.
For example, if the left wheels are driven aggressively over a kerb, you’ll only feel feedback on the left side of the controller.
DualSense controller speaker
Codemasters is also taking advantage of the DualSense controller speaker. The new race engineer (goodbye Jeff!) will talk to the player through the speaker providing vital information and track data throughout the race, adding to the immersion.
Adaptive triggers
F1 22 will also take full advantage of the PS5 DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers. If the brakes lock up, the brake trigger resistance increases. The resistance of the accelerate trigger also increases when simulating wheelspin.
The resting resistance of the accelerator and brake triggers is also subtly different, simulating the difference in pressure of the brake and accelerator pedals in a real F1 car.
Release date
F1 22 is just around the corner. It will be released on 1 July on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. Preordering the Champions Edition will give you three days early access on 28 June.
