Free-to-play games are becoming more and more common every year. Some will argue that most of the big games will be free-to-play in the near future. A genre that has so far not seen many of these kinds of games is racing games.
Assetto Corsa Competizione has received a lot of updates since it originally launched on PC in 2019. So, could we see ACC become free-to-play in the future? We give our take here.
Free-to-play racing game
In general, free-to-play games have a massive fanbase. Some of the most popular games around such as Fortnite and Call of Duty: Warzone are free-to-play. With the greatest of respect to Assetto Corsa, it isn't on that kind of level, but removing a starting price could boost its popularity.
We could see a Forza or Gran Turismo title go free-to-play, as these have massive popularity and the backing of Microsoft and Sony, respectively.
What about the future?
A lot can happen in a few years' time. Who would've predicted that a free game like Fortnite would get the level of popularity it has and become one of the most lucrative esports for gamers to be a part of?
Assetto Corsa Competizione is currently out on PC, PS4 and Xbox One and will make the leap to PS5 and Series X later this year. As for when the next AC will be released, we haven't heard anything yet. Given there was a five-year gap between the original AC and ACC, we could have to wait until 2024 before AC3 is released.
Perhaps Kunos will choose to make AC3 free-to-play, but ACC won't be getting that treatment anytime soon.
