Moza R3 Racing Wheel and Pedals review: Premium budget racing

Despite the rising costs of sim racing, there are still some great racing wheels and pedals for those on a budget. Take the Moza R3 Wheel and Pedals for example. Moza's latest bundle combines the quality we’ve come to expect while keeping the costs affordable for entry-level players to enjoy.

Moza kindly sent us an R3 Racing Wheel and Pedals bundle to try for ourselves. So how does the R3 Bundle compare to other offerings on the market? Let’s find out!

Built to last

First up is the build quality. Compared to the Moza TSW Truck Wheel, there is a noticeable dip when it comes to the R3's finish. The ES Wheel lacks the hand-stitched leather rim, while the buttons feel a little looser in their mounts.

However, beyond that, the wheel is still built to last. Driving feels natural, with the wheel allowing smooth movements even when riding through a gravel trap. The buttons are still responsive despite their loose fitting.

As for the pedals, the SR-P Lite pedal set is just as easy to use as the upgraded SR-P. The brake pedal doesn’t compromise on braking performance, while the throttle pedal has a nice, smooth movement.

Even the build quality of the pedals is similar to the next level up. The only noticeable difference at first glance is the size of the plate the pedals screw into. Beyond that, it’s easy to mistake the SR-P Lite for the SR-P pedals.

The R3 Wheelbase is also well-constructed. Although not perhaps as responsive as some of the more expensive Moza wheelbases, the direct drive still does the job when out on track.

With the build quality at the more premium level, how does the R3 Racing Wheel and Pedals bundle feel when out racing?

Smooth racing

The R3 Racing Wheel and Pedals bundle has been designed to work just as well on Xbox and PC. For this review, we were only able to test the R3 on a PC, but the experience should be similar for Xbox players. We also tested the bundle on both Forza Motorsport and Rennsport to get the best feel for how racing feels.

The best way to describe racing with the R3 is smooth. There are a few pitfalls when first plugging the wheel in as you initially need to spend time in the Moze Pit House configuring settings. But once everything is in order, the racing out on track is smooth.

Every steering input is registered with zero delays, gear changes on the paddles are quick and succinct, and the pedals are easy to use even during heavy braking zones.

The button layout is also instinctive. Despite being based on an Xbox controller, there are extra buttons in order to use more functions while racing. A pit limiter button is featured along the top of the wheel, while a radio button is situated within the thumb reach at the bottom.

Combined with the rest of the buttons, these can be mapped to any function in-game for the optimum racing experience. Now, racing feels more natural, without the need to take your eyes off the road to find a specific button.

Each button set also has a different shape and size to make it easier to find tactilely when needed. The only buttons that are hard to locate are the left-stick and right-stick pressers. These are hidden away just above the radio and Xbox buttons, respectively.

So, with the R3 smooth-to-drive, does the price point match the product?

Premium budget racing

At the time of review, the Moza R3 Racing Wheel and Pedals bundle is priced at £399. Although expensive at first glance, considering this includes a racing wheel, wheelbase, and pedals, the price becomes more justified.

Every item in the bundle is good value for money. With many sim racers paying over £300 just for a wheel, the fact that the R3 comes with that plus more makes it an excellent choice for those looking to get into pure sim racing.

Overall, the R3 is a great addition to any racer’s rig. Despite the build quality not quite reaching Moza’s other products, there’s still a sizeable gap between the R3 and other budget setups.

Of course, hardware always comes with minor issues, and the R3 is no different. Forza Motorsport, in particular, required a lot of visits to the input settings to get the best performance, with the car taking multiple collisions in the process.

The tweaks made to get Forza to run, though, also worked with Rennsport. Charging around Monza in a GT3 car showcased what the R3 bundle was designed for, delivering crisp racing action with no hardware interference.

Besides the issues above, no other changes were needed to make the wheel work on PC, even though it's designed primarily for Xbox. Xbox players can therefore be rest assured that they will get a PC-standard wheel for their console.

Any player looking to get into sim racing should look no further than the Moza R3 Racing Wheels and Pedals. Seasoned racers may find themselves already progressing beyond the R3’s abilities, but those leaving the pit lane for the first time will find no better complete package out there.
