This week marks not one but two tragic anniversaries. 30 years ago saw the devastating loss of both Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna at a solemn San Marino Grand Prix at Imola.
To mark the anniversary of Senna’s death, Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for a new biopic series, Senna, documenting his life.
A legend of racing
Ayrton Senna is undoubtedly one of the best to ever step into an F1 car. The Brazilian was a true legend of racing, winning three Formula 1 world championships while competing against other incredible drivers including Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, and Alain Prost.
Senna was also dominant around Monaco, winning six times even when the odds were stacked against him. He was also known to be fiery on track, clashing with Prost multiple times even when teammates at McLaren.
In particular, the 1989 and 1990 Japanese Grand Prix will go down in history. A collision between Senna and Prost on lap 46 at the former resulted in Prost winning the championship that season. Senna got his revenge the following year, taking out Prost on the very first corner to reclaim the championship.
2010 saw the documentary ‘Senna’ released to much acclaim. Telling the story of his life mostly through archival racetrack footage and home videos, ‘Senna’ begins with his F1 debut in 1984 and documents his life right up to his untimely death at the age of 34.
Despite the documentary's success, a new Netflix series is due to arrive later this year, and the first trailer has dropped today.
Netflix Senna series receives first trailer
Starring Gabriel Leone as the legendary driver, the Senna Netflix series, is due to arrive later this year. This is two years after its intended premiere, with filming delayed multiple times due to the pandemic. Today sees the first trailer released for the show, building up the hype ahead of its premiere.
Like the documentary, the Netflix series mainly focuses on Senna’s F1 career, beginning with his move to the UK in 1981 and ending with that tragic day at Imola. The battles with former teammate Alain Prost will also be shown, with this bitter rivalry featuring in the trailer.
The trailer shows Senna during his famous 1991 Brazilian Grand Prix victory. Due to exhaustion, he lost half of his gears and had to be lifted out of the car after crossing the line. This victory is deemed by many as one of the greatest F1 drives of all time due to the struggles he faced in the car.
As each lap passes, memories of his life are projected onto his visor, showing the moments that inspired his drive and passion. From driving karts in the rain to fighting with Prost in the garage, each memory spurs Senna on to cross the line and claim that elusive first home win.
The trailer ends with Senna crossing the line for victory, letting out the infamous celebratory scream heard around the world.
Senna has been produced in partnership with Senna’s sister Viviane. The full six-episode show will be released on Netflix later in 2024.
