Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 includes OutRun and Virtua Racing

Update: Pre-orders for the Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 are now live in the UK. It's being sold exclusively on Amazon UK for £104.99.

Sega has revealed the full games line-up for the Mega Drive Mini 2 and Genesis Mini 2.

Launching in October, the western version is bundled with a whopping 61 games – including three racing games. The games lineup also includes unreleased titles, new ports, and Mega-CD games.

Sega Mega Drive Mini 2 includes OutRun and Virtua Racing

For racing game fans, OutRun is the obvious standout. Based on Yu Suzuki’s classic 1986 arcade racer, the Sega Mega Drive port of OutRun arrived in 1991.

Compared to other home versions of OutRun, it was a respectful port, retaining the game's iconic soundtrack, multiple routes, and stunning scenery.

There were concessions though; namely the lack of engine noise and a slower frame rate. Due to licensing issues, the Ferrari licensing appears to be removed in the re-release.

Joining OutRun is its underrated sequel, OutRunners. The third official game in the OutRun series, OutRunners sped into arcades in 1993 and was ported to the Mega Drive in 1994.

At this time, the games industry was making the jump to 3D polygonal graphics. This meant OutRunners was overlooked with its dated-looking 2D sprite-scaling visuals.

Forks in the road returned after being removed from OutRun Turbo and there are 36 courses around the world.

While up to eight players could play OutRunners in arcades by linking cabinets together, the Mega Drive port is only playable in split-screen. The Mega Drive version was also never released in PAL regions, so it’s a welcome addition to the Mega Drive Mini 2 games lineup.

Virtua Racing is also part of the lineup. One of the first 3D polygonal video games, Virtua Racing wowed players with its revolutionary graphics and speed when it hit arcades in 1992.

It was later ported to Mega Drive in 1994 and was notoriously expensive as it required an extra chip to incorporate the Sega Virtua Processor.
