The Crew 2 next-gen update will add 60fps support and improved visuals

You can’t fault Ubisoft’s excellent post-release support for The Crew 2.

Consistent content updates have helped The Crew 2 become one of the most downloaded racing games on PlayStation. Having released back in 2018, The Crew 2 is starting to look dated. Thankfully, Ubisoft’s open-world racer is getting an overdue makeover in an upcoming free next-gen update.

60fps support for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S

Initially released on PS4 and Xbox One, The Crew 2 is backwards compatible on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but still runs at 30fps on next-gen consoles. This will soon change, as a patch update in July will finally add next-gen console support.

The update will boost the performance to a smoother 60fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X. Fans have been requesting a next-gen update for quite some time, but developer Ivory Tower says adding next-gen support to The Crew 2 has been “a bit more complex than it seems.”

However, the next-gen update is now in the testing phase as the French studio has made “huge strides” and plans to roll it out "by July."

As well as a higher frame rate, The Crew 2's next-gen update will improve the visuals on all platforms. These will include updated skies and lighting effects. A comparison video shows how a warm sunset affects the atmosphere with the update. No word yet on 4K or HDR support yet, though.

While the next-gen update will be available on PS5 and Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S was not mentioned.

Handling improvements

The Crew 2 features an expansive roster of cars across a range of categories, but the handling is often criticised for being inconsistent.

New cars added in updates feel and perform noticeably differently to old cars. Thankfully, Ivory Tower is aware of this and is working to improve The Crew 2’s handling. As a result, the driving experience will have a “better consistency,” which will make the game “more fun to play.”

Handling modifications in The Crew 2 will start on 22 March, with regular updates in each category.

Motorflex Season 5 starts 16 March

Since launching in 2018, MotorFlix season updates have added 53 new vehicles, 32 Live Summits, and a host of new events. After Season 4 introduced The Contractor series, Season 5 starts on 16 March with a new expansion called American Legends.

Episode 1 of The Crew 2 Season 5 starts this week

No details about the new season have been shared yet, but we can expect new cars, game modes, and cosmetic upgrades. While the name suggests the content will have an American theme, a teaser image appears to show a design blueprint of a Porsche 550 Spyder.

Ubisoft will also continue supporting The Crew 2 with a fifth year of free content. New cars, events, rewards, and competitions will be added to the open-world racer over the next few months.

We were hoping The Crew 3 would be announced this year, but with The Crew 2 receiving updates for another year, this now seems unlikely. Despite being four years old, there's still a lot of life left in The Crew 2 yet thanks to Ubisoft's ongoing support.
