With titles like Horizon Chase and Hotshot Racing harking back to classic arcade games, it’s a great time to be a fan of retro racers. Another game that pays homage to old-school arcade racers is the aptly named Formula Retro Racing.
Inspired by early polygonal 3D racers like Virtua Racing, Formula Retro Racing was initially released on PC and Xbox One in 2020 before being ported to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. Later this year, Formula Retro Racing is getting a surprise sequel.
Formula Retro Racing World Tour races to consoles in December
Releasing on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch in December, Formula Retro Racing World Tour will expand on the first game with new locations and cars.
The sequel will have you racing in eight iconic locations including Tokyo, Paris, and London. Whereas the first game focused solely on single-seater racing, the sequel will have an expanded roster of vehicle types including high-performance, muscle and standard race cars. Each vehicle type will have distinct handling characteristics to master.
Like the original game, Formula Retro Racing – World Tour’s driving physics will be surprisingly deep and nuanced - this isn’t a typical arcade racer that lets you blast around corners without slowing down.
With crisp low-poly HD visuals running at 60fps, four-player split-screen multiplayer, and online leaderboards, Formula Retro Racing – World Tour will combine thrilling arcade racing action with modern game design.
Release date
Formula Retro Racing – World Tour races onto PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on 14 December. A Steam version will follow in early 2023.
Ahead of its release, you can try this ‘90s arcade-style racer for yourself later this month. Formula Retro Racing – World Tour will also be playable at EGX in London between 22 and 25 September. If you can't wait until then, you can download an early playable Steam demo of Formula Retro Racing World Tour right now.
