With the popularity of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe showing no signs of slowing down, Nintendo effectively has the monopoly over kart racers. But a new crop of cartoony kart racers is attempting to steal the crown from the Italian plumber.
Microtransactions aside, Chocobo GP released in March on Nintendo Switch is considered one of the better modern Mario Kart alternatives.
Launching later this year, Disney Speedstorm also lets you race as Disney and Pixar characters from Mickey Mouse to Sulley from Monsters Inc.
Joining this growing list is Warped Kart Racers, a new kart racer starring characters from popular 20th Television Animation shows.
Race your favourite characters from Family Guy, King of the Hill & more
Arriving on Apple Arcade on 20 May, Warped Kart Racers features 20 playable characters from Family Guy, American Dad, King of the Hill, and Solar Opposites.
A full character list isn’t available, but the screenshots and trailer show you’ll battle it out with Peter Griffin from Family Guy, Stan Smith from American Dad, and Hank Hill from King of the Hill among others. There are also 16 maps inspired by fan-favourite episodes of each series.
Players will compete in an extensive single-player campaign or eight-player multiplayer challenges. Completing daily challenges will unlock new characters, skins, karts, and customisation options.
Warped Kart Racers is developed by Electric Square – the developer of Forza Street. Released in 2019 when it was initially branded as Miami Street, the free-to-play mobile spin-off reached the end of the road when it was shut down last month.
Release date
Available for Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV, Warped Kart Racers arrives on Apple Arcade later this month on 26 May.
Warped Kart Racers looks like a fun throwback to that glorious time when every mascot character you can think of was shoehorned into a kart racer, with mixed results.
With TV show licenses like Family Guy, American Dad, and King of the Hill, Warped Kart Racers could be a popular hit on Apple Arcade, but it’s a shame it isn’t getting a wider release on PC and consoles.
