A while ago, we ranked every Need for Speed game ever made. The bottom half of the list is largely populated by games that have been released in the last fifteen years.
One of the games down there is The Run, which was released in 2011. Despite its lacklustre review score, we believe that this game had huge potential and could be overdue for a sequel.
So, how likely is this? And what would a The Run 2 look like?
The original The Run
As the name suggests, The Run saw you take on a long race against time. The Run takes place between San Francisco and New York in the USA over a huge 3,000 miles.
The premise is that your character, Jack, is in trouble with organised crime and needs to repay a debt to the mob. To settle your accounts, you'll need to win the race against some very tough opposition.
The plot is a simple one, but NFS is always best in this form. The environments on show are also extremely varied and all look great. The deserts of Las Vegas, snowy Rocky Mountains and finally, the autumnal forests of upstate New York looked great for the time.
There were a lot of issues with The Run though, starting with the customisation, as there wasn't any. Also, those 3,000 miles go way too quickly, totalling a meagre five hours of single player gameplay.
Lastly, the game was also glitchy, being one of the worst of the PS3 era in this regard.
How likely is a The Run 2?
In all honesty, a sequel to The Run is a bit of a pipedream. It's been over ten years since the original The Run was released, and Need for Speed rarely do sequels these days.
The last sequel to a NFS game was Shift 2, also released in 2011. However, even though this was the second title in the Shift sub-series, it didn't have a continuous story.
The last NFS game to have a story which carried over is arguably NFS Carbon, which picked up where Most Wanted (2005) left off. Although Carbon was a vastly different game to Most Wanted.
So, even then, it's not a true sequel and NFS Underground 2 is last proper NFS sequel. Either way, it's been a very long time.
There is hope though, as we still don't have a title for the new NFS game. So, for now, it's definitely a possibility that we could get a The Run 2 before too long.
However, we've not heard any rumours about a sequel to The Run, but if it's done right, this has huge potential for a reboot.
