Rocket League came seemingly out of nowhere. A sequel to the forgotten PS3 game (deep breath) Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, Psyonix’s addictive car football game first launched on PS4 as a free PS Plus title in 2015. Since then, its popularity has exploded. But will there be a Rocket League 2?
Rocket League’s winning formula combining cars with football has made it one of the most popular modern video games in the world enjoyed by millions of players. Its player base continues to expand thanks to PC, Xbox and Nintendo Switch ports, a mobile spin-off, and a successful eSports series.
Regular updates with new game modes, cars, and arenas also keep players coming back for more, and we expect the annual Lucky Lanterns event to return in 2022.
Will there be a Rocket League 2?
Despite its staggering success, Rocket League 2 is unlikely to happen any time soon. Why? Because Rocket League arguably doesn’t need a sequel.
The car football game is still played by millions of fans. Its beautifully balanced gameplay is easy to understand for beginners but hard to master, rewarding skilled players who take the time to learn the intricacies of the physics-based game.
In a 2018 interview with Gamespot, Game Director Scott Rudi said there are no plans for a Rocket League sequel. Instead, Psyonix is focused on expanding the current game with new content.
“We want to keep this going,” Rudi told Gamespot. “I don’t know what I’d do with Rocket League 2. I’d rather do more to expand the existing Rocket League. It’s doing great, there is a lot ahead of it. So yeah, we have no plans for Rocket League 2.”
Of course, these plans could have changed since then. But recent game updates support Rudi's comments. Going forward, Psyonix clearly sees Rocket League as a live service game.
Rocket League Season Six release date
Regular season updates have added new content, with the latest Season 5 update adding a new Aftermath variant of the Starbase Arc arena, a Cosmosis Goal Explosion, and the Heatseeker Ricochet game mode.
Rocket League Season Five started on 17 November 2021 and ends on 9 March 2022. Going by past seasons, we can probably expect Rocket League Season Six to start in March 2022 and end in July or August 2022.
Rocket League Sideswipe scores on mobiles
While there are no plans for Rocket League 2, a mobile spin-off was released in November 2021 with Rocket League Sideswipe. Available on iOS and Android devices, Sideswipe converts the Rocket League experience to mobile with simplified controls and casual 1v1 or 2v2 matches lasting only two minutes.
Since launching last November, Rocket League’s mobile debut has proven popular, with over 20 million downloads within the first 40 days.
