Will Gran Turismo 7 have free roam?

It's official, Gran Turismo 7 is on the way and we can't wait until it launches next year! A lot has been confirmed, but there are still a lot of details that are up in the air. We know that Forza Horizon is being released on Xbox later this year, but will GT and PlayStation be able to respond to this?

What we're asking is will GT7 have a free-roaming element to its game for the first time ever? Here's everything we know so far.

Bags of potential

Forza and its Horizon spin-off series are both exclusives for the Xbox consoles. This provides Polyphony with a huge opportunity to claim the free-roaming racing sim market on PlayStation for themselves. At this point, the only competition would be themselves.

HUGE POTENTIAL: A GT Horizon style game would be extremely popular on PlayStation

We hypothesised what a GT Horizon would look like in a previous article, but to summarise, here are the main points. Fans have been clamouring for a Japanese setting for Horizon and with how many locations in Japan GT already has, they'd be in an ideal position to make this.

Things such as GT's incredible simulation model would remain in place, but hopefully with damage added to add another element to the gameplay. Things such as the car list will just be transferred over from the regular GT series' games.

The biggest challenge would be creating this sandbox to play in and the weather system which will affect the environments you'll explore.

Nothing confirmed yet

So far, we've heard nothing from Polyphony regarding a free-roaming element for Gran Turismo 7. That doesn't mean it's not going to happen though, far from it. As much of a pipe dream as it may seem, the home screen which we saw in the new GT7 trailer could be the answer we're looking for.

There are a lot of logos in this home screen. Some are fairly obvious, like the cup being for the GT Cade and the camera for photo mode. But what about ones like the plane? Could that be the ticket out of here and into a free-roam game mode?

It's too early to say for sure, but GT7 could have a free-roaming element to it. However, it is unlikely, as you'd expect it to have gotten a mention by now at this stage in development. We could see a GT Horizon in the future, but right now, that's something we'd have to wait for.
