Arcade racing games can take many forms, but perhaps our favourite is the wild and wacky world of Nintendo Switch combat raing.

Announced earlier this year, Chocobo GP is the long awaited follow-up to the original Chocobo Racing on PlayStation, only now it's a Nintendo Switch exclusive for Square Enix.

So when can we play? Let's take a look!

Chocobo GP release date

Originally given an open "coming 2022" release window, we finally have a firm date for Chocobo GP.

This racing game from the world of Final Fantasy will hit Nintendo Switch on 11 March 2022. We'll have to wait and see how many characters get a place in the racing title, but if Smash Bros Ultimate is anything to go by we will have a big range of characters to pick from!

Not only is there a release date, we also know that a demo version is coming too. This will give fans a chance to try the game out before buying it. There is no release date for the demo just yet, but it should be a month or so before the official release.

What to expect from Chocobo GP?

Chocobo GP is a Mario Kart style combat racer. A cartoony world full of colourful characters and bizarre racing contraptions!

The game will feature a story mode that wedges cutscenes and dialogue around the racing. the game is the stage of a grand racing tournament to which the constants have flocked to see who the best is. The winner gets bestowed upon them whatever they wish for.

The playable roster mainly includes a mix of named Chocobos, Moogles, and Summon Creatures. However, screenshots also reveal Final Fantasy IX’s Steiner and Vivi will be playable characters. We hope that more will be unveiled as we approach release day.

Chocobo GP will set itself apart from Mario Kart with character-specific powers, that allow for another layer of strategy within the racing. There are of course on-track boosts. These come in the form of Magic Eggs that contain a random type of magicite. These allow you to play spells based on Final Fantasy, such as shooting fireballs or setting traps.
