Gran Turismo 7 may be just around the corner, but Assetto Corsa Competizione is coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S next week. Owners of the original PS4 and Xbox One games can also upgrade to the next-gen versions for free.
Ahead of next week’s launch, Kunos Simulazioni has released an FAQ clarifying details about Assetto Corsa Competizione's next-gen upgrade. And it’s not all good news.
No cross-gen play at launch
As well as higher resolutions and frame rates, many players assumed that Assetto Corsa Competizione will have cross-play support on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for online multiplayer. This would allow PS5 players to play with friends on a PS4 and Xbox Series X|S owners to race with Xbox One players.
However, the FAQ confirms that the next-generation version Assetto Competizione won’t have cross-generation multiplayer at launch. As a result, “you will only be able to race with other players on the same console as you” according to the FAQ. It's a shame because the PS4 and Xbox One versions have much larger player bases to race with.
As the FAQ explains, the reason for this is that the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions support private lobbies, while the PS4 and Xbox One versions don’t have this feature. The higher 60fps frame rate would also give players an advantage against other racers on last-gen platforms.
While the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Assetto Corsa Competizione won’t have cross-play across console generations at launch, Kunos Simulazioni is “looking at in the future.”
No PlayStation VR support
The FAQ also confirms there are “no plans to release VR support for PlayStation.” This is disappointing as we were hoping Assetto Corsa Competizione would get PSVR 2 support in a future update.
Assetto Corsa Competizone PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release date
Assetto Corsa Competizione will launch digitally on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on 22 February. A physical version will follow on 24 February.
With a 4K resolution, 60fps, faster loading times, and 30 driver multiplayer lobbies, the next-gen version should offer a significant improvement over the original PS4 and Xbox One versions.
