EA Sports WRC’s Career is Broken After Update 1.40

After a rocky launch, last week’s Season 2 update was supposed to end the year on a high for EA Sports WRC. As well as adding the new Central European Rally, update 1.4 contained several bug fixes addressing long-standing issues.

Unfortunately, update 1.4 has done more damage, making the career mode unplayable for many players.

After installing update 1.4, many players can't continue the career mode in EA Sports WRC as the game keeps crashing. According to EA, specific combinations of Benefactor objectives are causing the game to crash for some players who attempt to continue their careers.

Players who have not started a career or start a new career are unaffected. Unfortunately, this means players experiencing game crashes in career mode will need to restart their progress or wait for an upcoming hotfix.

In an EA forum thread, EA notes that “some players may be able to load a Career Mode save without any issue, though this cannot be predicted in advance.”

However, players who are currently in Career Mode Season 2 and beyond in WRC, WRC2, Junior WRC are “at risk of a crash if they attempt to continue their career,” while players in Season 3 are at a “higher risk.”

Worse still, if the game crashes there is a risk of losing career progress “with no ability to recover.”

We experienced no issues when continuing career progress on PS5 at the start of Season 2. However, we noticed more screen tearing after installing the patch.

It’s a frustrating situation for players who want to continue their WRC career over the Christmas holiday. Unfortunately, it’s going to be a while before a hotfix arrives.

Hotfix coming in January

Codemasters is currently working on a hotfix, but it won’t be ready until mid-January due to the “complexity of the Career Mode issue, the action required to resolve it, and the time required for testing and certification.”

“Following the v1.4 update to EA Sports WRC, an unforeseen issue with Career Mode has occurred that is affecting a large number of players. We are currently investigating and working on a hotfix that will be released as soon as possible,” EA said on X, formerly Twitter.

“This hotfix is also expected to resolve the commonly-reported issue surrounding inconsistent AI performance when resuming an active event.

Due to the complexity of the Career Mode issue, the action required to resolve it, and the time required for testing and certification, we aim to be in a position to issue a hotfix on all platforms in mid-January.”

In the meantime, EA advises players with an active career save to avoid playing the career mode until the hotfix arrives.
