With the release of the Gran Turismo movie, the world’s most popular racing simulator is now a film. If you live in the UK, Gran Turismo (also known as Gran Turismo: Based on a True Story) is out now in cinemas. If you’re considering seeing it at the cinema, you’re probably wondering: how long is the Gran Turismo movie?
We’ve got everything you need to know about the Gran Turismo movie’s runtime right here.
How long is the Gran Turismo movie?
Directed by Neill Blomkamp, the Gran Turismo movie is based on the remarkable true story of Jann Mardenborough (Archie Madekwe), a gamer who becomes a professional racing driver after winning the GT Academy competition run by Nissan.
Mardenborough went on to race for several racing disciplines including the gruelling 24 Hours of Le Mans, where he finished third on the podium.
The film chronicles Mardenborough’s career from gamer to racer, but how long is the Gran Turismo movie?
The Gran Turismo movie clocks in at two hours and 15 minutes (135 minutes). After the film, footage from Mardenborough's racing career plays during the credits, but there are no post-credit scenes. A lot of racing action is packed into the runtime, yet Gran Turismo is shorter than other summer films released this year.
Several of this year’s summer blockbusters are close to, or even longer than, three hours long. With a runtime of three hours, Oppenheimer will test your bladder, as will Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One at two hours and 43 minutes.
While based on a true story, the Gran Turismo movie condenses and simplifies Mardenborough’s real GT Academy experience to fit the runtime. It starts with Mardenborough playing Gran Turismo in his bedroom before entering the GT Academy and becoming a real racing driver, competing in races around the world. Some events are also reordered to improve the flow of the narrative.
Is the Gran Turismo movie good?
Films based on video games have a poor reputation. However, the success of films like Sonic the Hedgehog and The Super Mario Bros movie are breaking this curse. Gran Turismo is getting mixed reviews from film critics, but we think it’s an entertaining racing movie with thrilling racing scenes, likeable characters, and an inspiring storyline.
It’s not perfect, though. While the gamer-to-racer premise is compelling, the plot is rife with sports movie tropes, from the washed-up racing coach to the underdog lead character who wants to prove himself.
Some unnecessary side characters pad out the runtime. Unsurprisingly in a Sony Pictures film about Gran Turismo, there’s also a lot of product placement. Luckily, these issues don’t derail the film. Gran Turismo is a great time at the cinema.
