It is one of the most popular racing simulators, but is Assetto Corsa good?
Developed by Kunos Simulazioni Assetto Corsa was originally released in 2014 for PC before making the jump to PS4 and Xbox One in 2016. But does it hold up today?
Let's take a look!
Is Assetto Corsa good?
As a nearly 10-year-old game, Assetto Corsa is still a popular title among racing fans.
Assetto Corsa Competizione is a newer game, boasting improved visuals, rain effects, and day and night cycles - features you won't find in Assetto Corsa.
Don't let this put you off, though. While the graphics are starting to show their age, Assetto Corsa is still one of the best PC racing games out there.
A gateway into sim racing
With their complex setups, sim racing can be daunting. But this isn’t the case for Assetto Corsa. You can go as in-depth as you like, but there are also plenty of assists for newcomers that can be turned off as you improve.
Because of its age, Assetto Corsa is also incredibly cheap. You can often get it as cheap as £3 in Steam sales. Assetto Corsa’s accessibility makes it the perfect gateway into sim racing.
Whereas Assetto Corsa Competizione only lets you race GT cars due to licensing, Assetto Corsa primarily focuses on production road cars, from the Abarth 500 to the Ferrari 488 Italia.
Some cars in Assetto Corsa’s roster like the Ferrari 488 Challenge Evo and Lamborghini Huracan GT3 are track-only.
An active modding community
Because of its age, Kunos Simulazioni no longer releases updates for Assetto Corsa, instead focusing on supporting Assetto Corsa Competizione and developing Assetto Corsa 2.
However, an active modding community makes up for this. Nearly ten years on, new content is still added to the game from new cars and tracks to graphical updates that transform the game’s visuals.
Whether you want to race a Formula 1 car or cruise around a Japanese highway or a quiet English countryside, the modding community has helped keep Assetto Corsa alive. There’s always something new to discover.
With a direct sequel still several years away, Assetto Corsa is still one of the best and most popular PC racing games, so you won’t struggle to find players to race against online.
Assetto Corsa’s universally positive reviews speak for themselves. At the time of writing, Assetto Corsa has a Very Positive rating on Steam with over 60,000 player reviews.
