Most racing gamers have heard of Assetto Corsa, but surprisingly few know about Assetto Corsa Competizione.
Assetto Corsa is renowned for being incredibly realistic and thoroughly moddable - and is much loved by serious sim racers. But what is Competizione all about? Is it a sequel to the original game, or is it something else?
Let's find out.
Assetto Corsa vs Assetto Corsa Competizione
First of all, you're probably wondering what the differences are between Assetto Corsa and Assetto Corsa Competizione.
As most of you know, Assetto Corsa is the older of the two games. It was first released in 2013 for Early Access, and then unleased to the wider world in 2014. That makes it pretty freaking old, right?
Don't let its age put you off. As thanks to Assetto Corsa's active modding community, new content - including new cars - are being added to the game frequently. Whether you want to race an F1 car from the 1950s, a Pagani Zonda or a Fiat Panda (because why not?), the options are pretty much endless.
In simpler terms, moddability is probably the biggest difference between the two games. There's no modding with Assetto Corsa Competizione - at least, not yet, anyway.
Instead, Competizione is the 'competition' edition of Assetto Corsa and focusses purely on GT class racing. So, is it worth buying?
Should I buy Assetto Corsa Competizione?
If you like GT racing, then yes. A resounding yes. And if you fancy an ultra-realistic racing experience, then it's a hell yes!
Racing fans will certainly appreciate the game's simulation of the tyres and aerodynamics here. We don't want to get too technical, but the game's engine and physics have improved dramatically from Assetto Corsa. Everything in that regard is just... better.
In addition, the graphics - provided by the Unreal Engine 4 - are photo-realistic. Overall, it's a more polished experience.

If you want more variety, then Competizione might not be for you. The total number of cars in Assetto Corsa Competizione comes to just 34, which is pittance compared to its predecessor. However, these cars, which includes machines from GT3, GT4, Cup and SuperTrofeo, are extremely well detailed - both in the way they look and feel to drive.
As with all sim racing games, Competizione will take some getting used to. But generally, in gaming terms, Competizione is way more beginner friendly than its older brother.
With the focus being on just one category, you'll find good online racing here with familiar tracks and pre-built setups. There's less messing around with tyre temperatures here, which, for me, is a good thing.
