Based on the true story of gamer-turned-racing driver Jann Mardenborough, Gran Turismo is getting its first film adaptation in August. As the release gets closer, Sony Pictures has dropped a second Gran Turismo movie trailer, and it’s high on drama.
Clocking in at two and a half minutes, the new Gran Turismo movie trailer is filled with thrilling racing action and emotionally-gripping drama.
Gran Turismo Movie Trailer 2 released
The new trailer starts with Jann Mardenborough played by Archie Madekwe joyriding his dad's car in a pulse-pounding police chase through night-time streets, demonstrating his driving skills. During the chase, there are even camera angles mimicking Gran Turismo's third-person chase camera.
He dreams of becoming a racing driver, but his parents, played by Djimon Hounsou and Geri Horner, don’t approve of his aspirations.
He soon proves them wrong when he enters the GT Academy gaming competition held by Nissan and wins the ultimate prize: becoming a professional racing driver.
In real life, Mardenborough won the 2011 GT Academy and went on to finish third in the LMP2 class during his Le Mans racing debut in 2013. It’s a remarkable story that lends itself well to Hollywood, and the film will reenact his remarkable journey from gamer to real racing driver.
The trailer certainly wants you to know it’s based on a true story, reminding you that “this actually happened” in big bold letters.
The latest Gran Turismo movie trailer is high on drama. We see Mardenborough forming rivalries against the best Gran Turismo players in the world. There’s also a dramatic crash in which a Nissan GT3 barrel rolls over the barriers.
It’s eerily similar to Mardenborough’s horrific real-life accident at the Nurburgring in 2015 that killed a spectator. It’s not clear if the film will allude to the spectator’s death. If it does, it will take an unexpectedly dark turn.
