Sony recently confirmed that Gran Turismo 7 will be playable on PSVR 2 at launch via a free update. This was exciting news for racing game and VR fans, but it wasn’t clear if the full game will support VR.
Now, Polyphony Digital has revealed new details about GT7’s PSVR 2 support.
All GT7 cars and tracks will support VR
In a PlayStation Blog update, Polyphony revealed that of GT7's 450+ cars will support VR, as will every track in the game from the Nurburgring to Tsukuba.
With GT7 taking advantage of PSVR 2’s eye tracking and foveated rendering, Polyphony promises players will “experience all cars and tracks in VR like never before.”
Online races confirmed for GT7 PSVR 2 – but no split-screen
Polyphony also confirmed that two-player split-screen races won’t support VR, but “all other races” will – including online races. This seems to suggest the full game will be playable in VR.
That said, it’s still not clear if the single-player campaign or online Sport mode will be playable in VR or if VR races will be held in a standalone mode.
We’re still hoping the campaign will be playable in VR, but GT7’s VR will be more fully featured than Gran Turismo Sport.
From the gameplay video shown at CES a few weeks ago, you’ll also be able to race in grids of at least 12 cars – a big step up from GT Sport, which only supported head-to-head races and time trials.
Players who already own GT7 can download the free PSVR 2 update from launch day on 22 February.
PSVR 2 launch window lineup revealed
In the blog post, Sony also revealed the entire PSVR 2 launch window lineup. More than 30 PSVR 2 titles will be available in the launch window through March, including GT7.
Previously unannounced PSVR 2 games joining the launch lineup include Before Your Eyes, Kayak VR: Mirage, Pavlov VR, Puzzling Places, Song in the Smoke: Rekindled, Synth Riders: Remastered Edition, Thumper, NFL Pro Era, What the Bat?, Rez Infinite, Tetris Effect, Creed Rise to Glory: Championship Edition, The Last Clockwinder.
Sadly, GT7 is still the only PSVR 2 racing game in the launch lineup. It’s a shame considering racing is a natural fit for VR. Let’s hope more racing games are planned for Sony’s state-of-the-art VR headset after launch this year.
