SCS Software released Euro Truck Simulator 2's 1.61 update on September 17, 2026, and the build that landed is not the one the studio was testing in June.
Two of the features that dominated the Experimental Beta, the Multi-Function Display and the rebuilt In-Game Menu, were pulled before release.
What shipped instead is a Volvo anniversary truck, a trailer rebuilt from scratch, and a map setting aimed at anyone chasing full road discovery.
Proximity Exploration Fills In the Map While You Drive
The most broadly useful addition in 1.61 is Proximity Exploration, an optional setting that automatically reveals a small area around the truck as it travels.
Chasing 100 percent map discovery has always meant physically driving down every road segment in the game, including service roads, dead ends, and depot access lanes that exist for no other reason.
With the setting switched on, running a normal route now uncovers the roads around it.
SCS built a limit into the feature so it does not give the whole map away. Secret roads still have to be earned, with Proximity Exploration revealing only the first segment as a hint and leaving the rest to be driven manually.
As the studio put it, "don't worry, secret roads will still have secrets to uncover!" The setting can be left off entirely by anyone who prefers the old rules.
The Volvo FH Series 6 100 Year Edition Marks a Centenary
Volvo Group was founded in 1927, and 1.61 adds a Volvo FH Series 6 100 Year Edition to mark the anniversary.
SCS's August blog announcing the truck described Volvo as "celebrating its 100th anniversary next year," which places the centenary proper in 2027 and this truck a year ahead of it.
The package applies to the Aero XL cabin. Two exterior paint jobs are included, 100 Year Edition Night and 100 Year Edition Day, running dark and light striping respectively with two Centennial logos apiece, plus a choice between a light box carrying the 100 Year logo or the FH16 one.
The interior is the heavier half of the work. Black leather door panels with unique stitching, matching carpets, a 100 Year Edition decoration on the rear wall, and red and blue ambient LED lighting across the dashboard.
Accessories run to a black leather steering wheel and two-tone seats.
The Livestock Trailer Has Been Rebuilt From Scratch
The Livestock Trailer received a full rework in 1.61, rebuilt from the ground up against modern European livestock trailers. The old belly-axle variant is gone, replaced by a lowered chassis running dual wheels.
Owned-trailer buyers pick between Straight 3 Axle and Lowered 3 Axle chassis and between an aluminum body and a fully paintable one, with up to four separate paint sections and a set of new accessories.
SCS also reworked the Freight Market and AI traffic versions and gave them new company paint jobs, so the change shows up on the road whether or not players ever buy one.
The Improved Material System Reaches the Volvo FH Range
The Improved Material System introduced in 1.60 covers three more trucks from the update. The Volvo FH Series 6, Series 5, and Series 4 all get the treatment, joining the DAF NGD and MAN TG3 TGX from the previous patch.
The technology uses multiple variants of dynamic cubemaps so interior surfaces reflect their surroundings and respond to ambient light more accurately, which makes leather, fabric, plastic, and metal read as distinct materials in low-light conditions.
SCS has said the rollout continues across the rest of the fleet in future updates.
Schwarzmüller's Low-Loader Gets the First Pass of a Bigger Rework
Owners of the Schwarzmüller Trailer Pack see one low-loader trailer and its accessories redesigned to match the manufacturer's current real-world model. SCS has framed this as the opening phase of a larger rework of the pack rather than a one-off. Cargo options on the trailer are unchanged.
Map Work Across Europe Prepares for the Coaches DLC
A round of map changes went in ahead of the upcoming Coaches DLC. Nuremberg gets a new bus station along with remade and newly created landmarks.
Karlstad's functional bus station gets a new station building, and the stations at Aarhus and Thessaloniki were updated, the latter with new signage.
A previously inaccessible street in Heraklion has been opened, and border crossings were adjusted to support vehicle-specific navigation.

The Multi-Function Display and In-Game Menu are still on the way.
SCS thanked beta participants for feedback on both and said the features "will be introduced in a future update, giving us more time to refine and polish these features and ensure they deliver the best possible experience when they are ready." No date has been attached to either.
The Coaches DLC has no announced release date or price. World of Trucks events return after a maintenance pause that began in March, starting with Cruising South Dakota, followed by Cruising Iceland, with Halloween and Christmas events planned for later in the year.
