Sim racing is rarely cheap, but will Rennsport be free to play?
The newest sim title on the grid is making waves, with fans eager to test out the new challenger to iRacing, rFactor 2, and Assetto Corsa.
The question a lot of players have though, is just how much Rennsport costs to play? Let's find out.
Is Rennsport free to play?
Sim racing titles don't have one set method of making money. While iRacing is a subscription service with a lot of premium content you have to buy on top of that, Assetto Corsa Competizione is an out-and-out game that you buy once and enjoy, along with its DLC of course.
Meanwhile, rFactor 2 is somewhere in between, with a low fee for the base game which only includes a small amount of content but there is a huge library of paid DLC players can get.
Rennsport is set to go a different way by being free to play!
Free-to-play often gets a bad rap, as it usually comes closely followed by pay-to-win, but is that the case with Rennsport? Well, no. Instead, it is pay to play more.
The base version of Rennsport will be free and include a few cars and tracks. This will let players get a feel for the game and see if they like it before investing any money.
Rennsport subscription
In order to access everything that Rennsport has to offer, from league management tools to more cars and tracks, a subscription will be needed.
Whether further purchases beyond that will be needed is unknown.
Rennsport is starting with GT3 cars and the familiar European tracks like Monza, Spa, Nurburgring, and Red Bull Ring. But the ambition is to have hundreds of cars and tracks in the game. And none of that is cheap for the developers.
Rennsport is surely looking to hit a familiar £10/month subscription fee, which would be marginally more than iRacing, but if that includes everything then it could be a bargain for players.
Just how much Rennsport will dent your wallet though, we will have to wait and see!
Release date
Competition Company originally targeted a December 2023 release window for Rennsport. However, that window passed without the game being released.
Instead, the game will be entering early access in Q3 of 2024. This puts the launch between July and September 2024, as confirmed by the Rennsport 2024 roadmap.
