Wreckfest is arguably one of the most enjoyable racing games on the market. Contact racing is actively encouraged, resulting in spectacular crashes at every corner. Developed by Finnish studio BugBear Entertainment of FlatOut fame, Wreckfest smashed out of Steam Early Access in 2018 before releasing on consoles a year later.
To everyone’s surprise, Nintendo quietly announced a Switch port of Wreckfest last September. After the Switch version failed to meet its original autumn 2021 release window, BugBear has remained silent - until now. After months of silence, Wreckfest finally has a release date for Nintendo Switch.
Wreckfest Nintendo Switch release date announced
BugBear Entertainment has announced Wreckfest will release for Nintendo Switch on 21st June, 2022. A new Wreckfest Nintendo Switch release date trailer gives us a glimpse of the game’s chaotic gameplay.
The extra time in the garage appears to have paid off. Compared to the footage shown last September, the Switch version of Wreckfest looks better than we expected.
Obviously, it’s never going to compare to the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions, which feature 4K resolution and 60fps support - BugBear has confirmed the Switch version will run at a “steady 30fps.”
But despite all the mayhem happening, the game appears to be well-optimised for the Switch. Crucially, BugBear’s excellent damage modelling doesn’t look downgraded and environments are still filled with destructible objects.
The Switch version of Wreckfest will feature online racing for up to 16 players, as well as offline tournaments and car customisation.
Season packages
Two season packages will be available for the Switch version.
The Season 1 package includes 20 vehicles, 20 roof decorations, and a car customisation pack with new armour, rims and other add-ons. Season 2 package adds 12 extra cars to the vehicle roster.
Available on 21st June, the digital and retail editions will retail for £34.99/ $39.99/€39.99. Pricing for the season packages hasn’t been announced yet.
If you’ve played Burnout Paradise to death and looking for a new destructive racer for Nintendo Switch, Wreckfest is shaping up to be a great alternative.
