Some of the best racing games of the past had split screen multiplayer, but does Forza Motorsport have split screen? Being able to race with your friends in the same room was a staple of racing games of the 90s and 00s, so does Forza Motorsport have the same?

Splitting the race

From the original Crash Team Racing in 1999, to 2014’s Trials Fusion, split screen multiplayer is perfect for players who don’t want to race online. Whether it was racing normally, or taping a blanket across the centre of the screen, nothing beat the pure entertainment of beating your friends with them sat right next to you.

Forza Motorsport 7 supports split screen multiplayer, with players able to take on their friends on photorealistic tracks, 4K resolution, and 60fps. Even Gran Turismo 7, Forza Motorsport’s main rival, supports split screen multiplayer. So surely Forza Motorsport does too, right?

Does Forza Motorsport have split screen?

For Forza Motorsport players looking for that social experience with their friends, we have bad news. Forza Motorsport does not support split screen multiplayer.

Forza Motorsport’s creative director, Chris Esaki, confirmed back in August’s Forza Monthly that Forza Motorsport won’t launch with split screen multiplayer. Not only that, spectator mode for online races or the ability to race against AI Drivatars in certain multiplayer modes are also absent at launch.

As to why Forza Motorsport doesn’t support split screen, it all comes down to technical limitations. Forza Motorsport utilises photorealistic graphics, a fully dynamic day-night and weather cycle, things that would be very difficult to display in split screen without compromises.

Interestingly, there’s a lot of emphasis on the fact Forza Motorsport won’t support split screen ‘from launch’. This means there’s a chance it could be added to the game at a later date.

Split screen is just one of a number of features missing from launch, including the infamous Nurburgring Nordschleife as well as drift and drag racing modes. We already know the Nordschleife is coming in 2024, so maybe there’s hope for the other missing features too.
