Gran Turismo 7 update 1.29 to include five new cars and a classic track

Gran Turismo 7 getting a free PSVR 2 upgrade in update 1.29 - but that's not all.

This bumper update will also add five new cars, bring back a classic track, and even let you sample Sophy AI for the first time.

So what can players expect from the latest GT7 update?

Five cars coming to Gran Turismo 7 tomorrow including new Vision GT

Following Kazunori Yamauchi's traditional shadowy teaser showing the car's silhouettes, Gran Turismo 7 update 1.27 has been fully revealed on PlayStation Blog.

While Yamauchi teased four cars, we're actually getting five new cars in the update.

First up we have the Citroën DS 21 Pallas '70. Despite being one of the most iconic cars of all time renowned for its hydropneumatic suspension, this is the first time the iconic French car has ever appeared in a Gran Turismo game.

In fact, you rarely see the Citroen DS in racing games at all – the only Forza game it’s appeared in is Forza Horizon 4.

Joining it is a new open wheeler: the Honda RA272, notable for being Honda's first single-seater to win Formula 1.

Rounding off the new cars in update 1.29 are the Porsche 911 Carrera RS (901) '73 and the Italdesign Exeneo Vision Gran Turismo.

The first new Vision GT car since the Ferrari Vision GT, the Italdesign Exeneo features a crystal sphere cockpit developed around the driver. Power is sourced from a powerful V10 mid-engine and electric motor hybrid system, but the power output is unknown.

Unusually, the Italdesign Exeneo will be offered in two variants: a Street Mode and an Off-road Mode, with the latter featuring a higher ride height and larger tyres.

Grand Valley returns

Intriguingly, Yamauchi teased last weekend that “big updates are coming next week.” This was not an understatement.

Just in time for GT7's first anniversary next month, update 1.29 will include the long-awaited return of Grand Valley. While we've had plenty of new cars, we've been clamouring for more classic tracks in GT7 so this is a very welcome addition.

A fan-favourite circuit, Grand Valley has been absent in Gran Turismo for ten years since GT6 in 2013. In GT7, Grand Valley has been updated with "an all-new look". A new Highway 1 configuration is a" challenging course featuring full-throttle high speed sections" and "tight winding corners."

There will also be a shorter 2000m South with "harsh elevation changes and blind corners to keep drivers on their toes," along with the signature bridge and tunnel.

Notably, the classic Grand Valley Speedway layout from previous Gran Turismo games is absent, but will hopefully be added in the future.

Race with GT Sophy

Polyphony has been working on GT Sophy for a long time. The new AI racing agent developed by Sony AI is said to be so advanced that it can beat the world's fastest Gran Turismo players.

In update 1.29, we can finally experience GT Sophy ourselves.

Available until the end of March, a limited-time Race Together event will let you race against GT Sophy. This game mode will be accessible in a banner at the top right of the World Map during the trial period. However, it's only accessible on PS5 and unlocked after reaching Collector Level 6.

During the trial, Players will be matched against GT Sophy agents in races on four different tracks with different difficulty levels. Alternatively, you can also race with GT Sophy in one-on-one races in equal conditions races. During races, GT Sophy will also "express itself" with emoticons.

Polyphony hasn't said when GT Sophy will be implemented, but the trial should give us a taste of much-needed AI improvements planned for GT7 as the standard AI opponents leave a lot to be desired.

Free PSVR 2 update

The other headline feature in update 1.29 is PSVR 2 support. Unlike GT Sport, GT7 will be fully playable in VR, meaning you can experience every car, track and event on PSVR 2.

Overall, this is easily GT7's best update in a long time and makes up for the lack of a January update.

Release date

Gran Turismo 7 update 1.29 will go live tomorrow, 21 February.

According to the server maintenance notice, GT7's servers will be offline tomorrow between 6am-8am GMT and 20 February 10pm-12am PST. This means update 1.29 should be live tomorrow from 8am GMT / 12am PST.
