GTA classics reportedly getting remaster release this winter

It's been a long time since a new Grand Theft Auto game was released.

With GTA Online turning into an enormous cash cow, Rockstar hasn't really had a reason to push GTA 6 out, but reports are now coming in that some of their classic GTA titles could be getting a full remaster treatment.

That's right, GTA 3, Vice City, and even San Andreas could be making a return in 2021.

Next-gen GTA

We know that a PS5 and Xbox Series X version of GTA V is on its way. The game, which originally dropped on PS3 and Xbox 360, is likely to sell well on the new consoles.

However, that might not be the only GTA coming to the new consoles this year. According to an investigation by Kotaku, Rockstar is working on remasters of their classic PS2 titles.

For many these were the peak of the GTA series, with San Andreas in particular considered one of the best games ever made.

Kotaku's sources are reportedly reliable, having provided them with updates on GTA Online well ahead of time. The investigation states that Rockstar is actively developing remastered versions of GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas using Unreal Engine, and will be a mix of "new and old graphics".

While UI has been updated, it all retains the classic style and feel of the original titles.

When could the remasters arrive?

The report says these remasters, being done by Rockstar Dundee, could be available as soon as late October/early November.

Originally planned as a bonus for those getting next-gen GTA 5, it's no surprise to see these games bundled together into one money-spinning pack for players.

Kotaku's report says the games will be available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, PC, Stadia, and mobile. Though it does suggest that the PC and Switch versions could slip into 2022. No surprise there!
