Need for Speed 2022 could be revealed at Summer Game Fest

This is normally the busiest time of year for the games industry with major game announcements at E3. This year is slightly different. however. E3 2022 is cancelled, but other events are taking its place.

Later this week, the Microsoft & Bethesda Games Showcase starts this Sunday on 12 June. We’re hoping to see a full Forza Motorsport reveal and a look at the first Forza Horizon 5 expansion at the event.

But before then, Geoff Knightly’s Summer Game Fest 2022 kicks off tomorrow. And there could be a surprise racing game reveal.

In a Tweet, EA says it has “some surprises that you won’t want to miss out on.” The timing suggests EA is teasing a surprise reveal tomorrow at Summer Game Fest 2022. One of them could be Need for Speed 2022. 

Need for Speed 2022 reveal at Summer Game Fest 2022?

EA could be hinting at a Need for Speed 2022 reveal at Summer Game Fest 2022. However, at the time of writing, there are no hints on the official Need for Speed social channels. EA also isn’t hosting an EA Play event this year, making it harder to predict when NFS 2022 will be revealed.

But with rumours pointing to a November release, the time is right for the covers to come off the next NFS game.

Adding to the speculation, PR agent Robert Serrano claims on Twitter that NFS 2022 will be shown at Summer Game Fest 2022. Take this with a pinch of salt though, as this is an unverified rumour.

To lower expectations, Geoff Keighley has said this year’s Summer Game Fest will be “primarily focused” on games already announced. That said, it’s no secret that NFS 2022 is in development.

The unnamed Need for Speed Heat sequel was first announced back in 2020 with a short video showcasing Criterion’s next-gen graphics engine.

If Need for Speed 2022 is revealed tomorrow, there will likely be a gameplay trailer and a release date announcement.

So far, all we know officially is that NFS 2022 is being co-developed by Criterion Games and Codemasters Cheshire. EA has also confirmed the new NFS will release between 1 October and 31 December this year.

According to rumours, NFS 2022 will reportedly be set in a fictional city called Lake Shore City inspired by Chicago and launch on current-gen consoles only in November.
