With the surprise announcement that Mario Kart 8: Deluxe is getting a two-year DLC expansion featuring 48 remastered tracks, Mario Kart 9 is likely several years away. Thankfully, there are plenty of alternative kart racers heading to the Nintendo Switch.
During February’s Direct show, Nintendo revealed Disney Speedstorm, a new free-to-play kart racer with Disney characters and locations coming this year. Chocobo GP, a colourful kart racer set in the Final Fantasy universe, is also just around the corner.
With less than a month until release, Square Enix has revealed new details about the online Chocobo GP mode, seasonal rewards, and the free-to-play “Lite” version.
Chocobo GP Mode and Season One content
Up to 64 players can compete in a bracket-style online tournament called Chocobo GP Mode with seasonal events. Each season lasts around two months and dedicated players can unlock rewards such as items or Gil, which can be spent in the in-game Gil Shop.
Alternatively, you can also buy a Prize Pass to access special rewards in each season including new characters. In Season One, Cloud Strife will be a Prize Pass-exclusive reward.
However, the first Prize Pass reward will effectively be free as all players who log in can obtain 800 mythril (the price of a Prize Pass) for a limited time. Squall Leonhart will also be available at the Gil shop for all players in Season One.
In addition, Square Enix has revealed some of the characters and courses from the Final Fantasy universe in Chocobo GP.

Chocobo GP Lite free demo
If you want to try before you buy, a free “Lite” version of Chocobo GP will be available to download as a “deluxe demo.”
Compared to the full game, the number of characters is limited in Chocobo GP Lite. While you can race online in Chocobo GP Lite, only players who own the full version can host lobbies in online and local multiplayer. Chocobo GP Lite owners can also play through the Story Mode Prologue.
Chocobo GP release date
Pre-orders for Chocobo GP are now live. Chocobo GP launches on 10 March, 2022, for Nintendo Switch.
