Gran Turismo 7 races to number 1 in UK game charts

The wait for Gran Turismo 7 is finally over. Polyphony Digitalā€™s new racing simulation was released on PS5 and PS4 last week on 4 March - and early indications suggest itā€™s selling very well.

Top of the podium

As GamesIndustry.biz reports, GT7 debuted at number one in the UK game charts for the week ending 5 March, knocking Elden Ring off the podium.

While GT7 sold 28 per cent fewer boxed copies than GT Sport when it launched in 2017, the data doesnā€™t include digital sales. However, digital download sales will be released later this week.

Gran Turismo 7 is off to a strong start, debuting at number one in the UK game charts

Since GT Sport launched in 2017, digital game sales have soared, outselling physical game releases. Considering this is the first numbered GT game since GT6 in 2013 as well as a cross-platform game on PS5 and PS5, we suspect GT7 had an even bigger launch than GT Sport.

Strong sales for PS5

Even though PS5s are still in short supply, 76 per cent of GT7ā€™s sales were for the PS5 version. The remaining sales were on PS4. While weā€™re not surprised that GT7 has debuted at number one considering itā€™s one of the most popular racing game franchises, it's an impressive chart position for a PlayStation-exclusive. Ā

Despite releasing in 2017, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling remarkably well too, finishing in sixth place in the UK boxed game charts. Last month, Nintendo revealed that MK8 Deluxe has sold 43.35 million copies, making it the best-selling game in the franchise.

GRID Legends, on the other hand, still hasnā€™t made the top ten charts after launching just over a week ago. Launching a new racing game just one week before the juggernaut that is GT7 probably wasnā€™t the best sales strategy. Codemasters should have delayed GRID Legends for a few months to maximise sales.
