Psyonix has done a terrific job updating Rocket League over the years. Season updates add regular new content. Psyonix also hosts timed Special Events like the Lucky Lanterns event, which is expected to return this year. However, Rocket League is now seven years old and Psyonix has no plans for a sequel.

Luckily, Rocket League is far from dead. The servers are still active on all platforms, attracting millions of players every day.
Since Psyonix doesn’t release player counts, it’s difficult to determine how many people are still playing Rocket League. However, according to unofficial data released by ActivePlayer, an average 97,055,144 people played Rocket League in December 2021. These numbers are staggering considering the car football game first launched in 2015.
Free-to-play
Aside from its addictive skill-based gameplay, one of the reasons why Rocket League is still so popular is its accessibility. As of September 2020, Rocket League is free-to-play. Before then, it sold for £15.99 on digital stores.
It’s also available on a variety of platforms including PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC, with backwards compatibility support for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is also cross-play support enabling players to play online with friends on different platforms.
What’s next for Rocket League?
Psyonix has no plans for a sequel. Instead, the developer is still supporting Rocket League with new updates and content. At the start of 2022, the McLaren 765LT supercar was available to buy in the Item Shop for a limited time.
The popular Lucky Lanterns event is also likely to return in February 2022 to coincide with Lunar New Year. With Season 5 ending in March, Season Six should also release soon with new content to keep players coming back to Rocket League in 2022.
With millions of active players, regular content updates, and a popular eSports series, Rocket League isn’t going anywhere any time soon.
