Gran Turismo is reportedly getting a movie adaptation

Following yesterday’s surprise Gran Turismo TV show announcement, a Gran Turismo movie adaptation is reportedly in development at Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions.

Neill Blomkamp reportedly directing Gran Turismo movie

According to a report by Deadline, Sony wants Neill Blomkamp to direct Gran Turismo’s big-screen debut. Blomkamp’s directorial credits include the science fiction films District 9, Elysium, and Chappie, making him an unusual choice to direct a movie based on a racing game franchise.

With the Gran Turismo movie allegedly at an early stage of production, plot details are being kept under wraps. How Sony plans to adapt Gran Turismo for the big screen is a mystery.

Unlike games like GRID Legends and recent Need for Speed titles, Gran Turismo doesn’t have a story mode or characters (we’re not counting the talking heads that pop up in the GT Café).

The plot could be inspired by the GT Academy, focusing on a GT player who makes the jump into real-world racing. Or it could be a traditional racing movie like Rush and Le Mans 66. After Uncharted made over $400 million at the box office, Sony Pictures will want to

Gran Turismo TV show

Curiously, Deadline also reports that the Gran Turismo TV show was a rumour and is “not accurate.” Conversely, other sources report the TV adaptation was officially announced by PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan at a business briefing.

As reported by Push Square, according to a user on ResetEra the Gran Turismo TV show was confirmed during a Q&A session at the briefing. At the time of writing, the Gran Turismo TV show doesn't have a confirmed distribution partner.

A Gran Turismo TV show is also reportedly in development.

If a Gran Turismo movie and TV show are in the works, the TV show will likely be a documentary series about the game’s development or the FIA-Certified Gran Turismo Championships.

Gran Turismo isn’t the only PlayStation property getting the TV show treatment either. TV shows based on God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us, and Twisted Metal are also in development.
