With over 80 million sales, Gran Turismo is one of the most popular racing game franchises in history. And now the popular racing franchise is making the jump to TV.
Gran Turismo TV show in development
During an investor briefing reported by IGN, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan revealed that TV adaptations of several PlayStation franchises are in development.
One of these projects is a Gran Turismo TV show. Unfortunately, no other details were shared, so there’s little to go on.
A network or streaming service for the Gran Turismo TV show was not announced either. However, during the conference, Ryan confirmed a God of War TV series will premiere on Prime Video. A TV adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn is also in development for Netflix.
Considering the Gran Turismo games don’t have storylines or characters, we’re curious to see how Sony adapts GT for TV. Perhaps we’ll see the live-action TV debut of Sarah, the GT Café’s main talking head?
Real-life FIA Gran Turismo Championship drivers like Martin Grady, Fabian Portilla, and Lucas Ordonez also pop up in the game, so perhaps they will appear in the TV series too.
If we were to speculate, we imagine the plot mirroring the GT Academy, with a Gran Turismo player applying their skills from the game to become a real racing driver.
Jann Mardenborough famously finished third in the LMP2 at the 2013 24 Hours of Le Mans after winning the GT Academy. This success story would translate well to TV. With that in mind, it could be a TV documentary series, but we'll have to wait and see.
