The Gran Turismo movie was gearing up to race into theatres in just a few weeks, with a release set for 11 August. Unfortunately, Sony Pictures Entertainment has put the brakes on the Gran Turismo movie, announcing a last-minute delay.
With the Gran Turismo movie taking an unexpected pit stop, fans are going to have to wait a bit longer to find out if it was worth the wait and does Sony’s racing franchise justice.
Gran Turismo movie delay
Gran Turismo was initially set to release on 11 August in the US but has been delayed until 25 August as part of a significant reshuffle to Sony Pictures Entertainment’s release calendar. This means Gran Turismo will arrive two weeks later than planned.
The delay comes as part of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA (The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) strikes in the US. Due to the strikes, the film's lead actors Orlando Bloom and David Harbour can't promote the picture in the US.
Variety reports that other major blockbusters like Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Marvel’s Kraven, and the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel.
Despite the delay, Gran Turismo’s promotional campaign is kicking into high gear with a flurry of trailers, featurettes, and advertisements. In the UK, Gran Turismo will still release on 9 August as planned, however.
At the time of writing, Cinema chains like Vue, Showcase, and Cineworld are still advertising showings for Gran Turismo next week, with Cineworld and Showcase providing preview screenings on 7 August.
While the delay is disappointing for fans eager to see Gran Turismo’s big-screen debut, this could be a blessing in disguise.
An overcrowded summer release schedule has seen several franchise films like Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny flop at the box office. Conversely, Barbie and Oppenheimer continue to dominate the current movie landscape. Delaying Gran Turismo for a few weeks gives it more room to breathe and a better chance of succeeding.
