As GRID Legends approaches its first anniversary next month, Codemasters has announced the underrated arcade racer will soon be playable in VR.
GRID Legends coming soon to Quest VR headsets
While there’s no word on PSVR 2 or PC support yet, the VR version of GRID Legends is coming to Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro headsets on 12 January.
From the accompanying trailer, the full game appears to be playable in VR, meaning you can experience the story mode, Race Creator, and online multiplayer in VR.
Understandably, the graphics are significantly downgraded. Gameplay shown in the trailer reveals a noticeable drop in detail compared to the PC and console versions.
The blurry visuals look rough, but it’s unreasonable to expect the Quest version of GRID Legends to match the visual fidelity we saw in last week’s Gran Turismo 7 PSVR 2 gameplay reveal given the lower hardware specifications and entry price.
Nevertheless, GRID Legends should still offer a fun, immersive, and intense VR racing experience with the ability to move your head around in the cockpit view.
VR support is more common for realistic racing simulations, so it's refreshing to see an arcade racer get the VR treatment.
Release date
GRID Legends is coming to Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest Pro on 11 January. It’s currently available to pre-order from Meta for £20.69 / $26.99 with a ten per cent discount.
This isn’t Codemasters’ first VR racing game. F1 22 was playable in VR on PC, but GRID Legends marks the first native Quest title from Codemasters and EA.
Considering that F1 22 was playable in VR at launch, it’s surprising to see the VR version of GRID Legends is currently exclusive to Quest VR headsets. Being able to play GRID Legends in VR on PC with a wheel would certainly enhance the experience.
Let’s hope GRID Legends coming to Quest also paves the way for a PSVR 2 release as there’s a distinct lack of PSVR 2 racing games apart from GT7.
