As we wait for news on Need for Speed 2022, now is the perfect time to revisit Need for Speed Heat. If you have a PlayStation Plus Essential subscription, you can download NFS Heat for free this month.
Need for Speed Heat free to download on PlayStation Plus
Available from 6 September until 3 October, Need for Speed Heat leads the PlayStation Plus Monthly Games lineup in September. Other free PS Plus games this month include Granblue Fantasy: Versus and Toem.
To download NFS Heat, you’ll need a PS Plus Essential subscription, which costs £6.99 for one month, £19.99 for six months, or £49.99 for 12 months. Even if you don’t download it, make sure to redeem it on your account so you don’t miss out.
Developed by the now-defunct EA Ghost Games, Need for Speed Heat was released back in 2019 and is the last entry in the NFS franchise.
While staples from previous NFS games such as street racing, thrilling cop chases, and deep car customisation returned, NFS Heat introduced a new mechanic that made the police chases more engaging and strategic.
NFS Heat lets you choose whether to race at day or night. Like NFS ProStreet, daytime races are legal sanctioned events with cash rewards. At night, races are illegal and cops will chase you down more aggressively.
Night-time races earn you reputation points to spend on cars and upgrades. Get busted and you lose your reputation points, adding a sense of risk vs reward.
Need for Speed 2022 rumours
The timing of Need for Speed Heat on PlayStation Plus likely isn’t a coincidence: it could pave the way for the long-awaited reveal of Need for Speed 2022 to be revealed this month.
With the release date reportedly delayed until December, a September reveal looks likely after the game was originally supposed to be shown in July.
