Boost starts give you a quick speed boost off the starting line to gain an advantage. This is a common tactic in arcade and kart racers, particularly in Mario Kart. However, boost starts work slightly differently in Hot Wheels Unleashed 2.

In most racing games, hitting the accelerator just before the countdown says “go” gives you an instant boost start. Not so in Hot Wheels Unleashed 2. Instead, you need to pay attention to when the countdown reaches "2."

Press and hold the accelerator as soon as the “2” in the countdown appears. It's all about getting the timing right. If you time it right, your wheels will start spinning, a green flame will appear under your car, and your boost bar will fill up.

The other twist is you need to press the boost button as soon as the countdown says "go." You won’t get a boost start if you don't do this. To activate boost, press X on the PlayStation controller, A on the Xbox controller, or right shift on the keyboard (you can view the full controls list here). Get the timing right, and you’ll roar off the line and get a handy head start over the competition.

This method won't work for all cars, however. If you see a coloured gauge appear on-screen next to your car, you need to tap the accelerator until the marker reaches the green area of the gauge. Keep holding the accelerator in the green area until the countdown ends to perform a boost start.
