F-Zero X coming to Nintendo Switch this week

Released in 2004 on Gameboy Advance, F-Zero Climax was the last F-Zero game. Since then, the franchise has remained dormant, meaning we haven't had a new F-Zero game in nearly 20 years. Sadly, Nintendo seemingly isn't interested in making a new F-Zero game.

Fortunately, F-Zero fans can get their fix later this week because F-Zero X is coming to Nintendo Switch this week via the Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

F-Zero X modernised with online multiplayer

A sequel to the original F-Zero on SNES, F-Zero X was originally released on the N64 back in 1998. While the first game's Mode 7 graphics created a pseudo-3D effect, F-Zero X made the jump to 3D with polygonal graphics.

Like the original release, the Switch version of F-Zero X features 30 different hover-car racers, including an updated version of the Blue Falcon from the original game. You race against 29 other hover-cars on tight twisty tracks at supersonic speeds of over 1,000 km/h.

Race with up to three friends in online multiplayer

All original game modes from the original release carry over to the Switch version, including Grand Prix Cup, Time Trial, and Death Race.

Unlike the original release, however, F-Zero X has online multiplayer for up to four players on the Switch. This will be the first time an F-Zero has had online multiplayer.

Release date

F-Zero X will be available on Switch later this week on 11 March, but you’ll need a Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. A 12-month subscription costs £34.99. This will allow you to access a library of classic Nintendo 64 including Mario Kart 64.

There hasn't been a new F-Zero game in nearly 20 years

Next week, the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass is launching at no extra cost for Switch Online + Expansion Pack members, adding 40 classic tracks released in four waves until 2023. Available on 18 March, Wave 1 will add eight classic tracks including Choco Mountain, Paris Promenade, Sky Garden.

If you don’t have an Expansion Pack subscription, Switch Online members can also play the original F-Zero in the SNES library.
