Dirt bike racing game fans are spoiled for choice this year. Milestone’s Monster Energy Supercross 5 landed on PC and consoles last month. Rainbow Studios’ long-running MX vs ATV series is also making a comeback this year with MX vs ATV Legends.

Originally scheduled for a 24 May release, MX vs ATV Legends has suffered a delay.

New release date

In a development diary, Rainbow Studios confirmed MX vs ATV Legends will release on 28 June, around a month later than planned. Sorry MX vs ATV fans, but you're going to have to wait a little longer to get your hands on the latest instalment.

Fans will have to wait a bit longer for MX vs ATV Legends

As for why MX vs ATV Legends is delayed, the developer is using the extra time to finetune the physics, improve the frame rate, and iron out any bugs.

“Game delays are never fun for the developers, or players. In our case we needed to choose between speed or quality, and the decision was simple,” CEO Lenore Gilbert explained. “We want to make sure that when MX vs ATV Legends comes out, it is the highest level of quality that Rainbow Studios can offer.

“Our art team making sure that frame rate is high and stable by making tons of passes in all of the environments. Releasing trailers, then listening to feedback so that we can make sure the physics are tuned just right."

"Design working across all departments to make sure that what we offer is a gaming experience you will be excited about every time you turn your console on. Engineers testing our new dedicated servers for stability so that the online experience is seamless for everyone. And of course, QA is working out all the bugs.”

"All of these moving parts have to come together just right in order to make a game that is stress free, fun, challenging, and rewarding to the players. We now have that last little bit of time we need to make sure that you all get the game you deserve and we are beyond excited for what Legends has in store for you.”

Delays are frustrating, but if extra development time results in a better, more polished product, it will be worth the wait.

Launching on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S Xbox One, and PC, MX vs ATV Legends features the “deepest career mode in franchise history” with sponsorship opportunities and invitational events.

The latest instalment also introduces a new Trials mode allowing players to carve their own path.
