Assetto Corsa’s long-awaited sequel is set to arrive on PC next Spring, but many are wondering if it will get a console release. Thanks to a financial report from Digital Bros (the parent company of developer Kunos Simulazioni and publisher 505 Games), we now have confirmation that Assetto Corsa 2 is coming to consoles.
It's not all good news though, as console players will have to wait longer to experience Assetto Corsa 2.
Assetto Corsa 2 console release confirmed
Digital Bros' latest financial statement reaffirms that Assetto Corsa 2 is on track for a PC release in Spring 2024 during the “next fiscal year” ending in July 2024. It goes on to confirm “long term” plans are in place for an Assetto Corsa 2 console release.
Platforms are not confirmed, but it’s safe to assume Assetto Corsa 2 will launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. PS4 and Xbox One releases are unlikely as developers are moving away from last-gen platforms.
“Digital Bros remains cautiously optimistic about the long-term publishing plans involving the release of console versions of Assetto Corsa,” the report reads.
When will Assetto Corsa 2 be released on consoles?
No release window was given for Assetto Corsa 2's console release, so PlayStation and Xbox players may have a long wait. Looking back at the original game, Assetto Corsa was released on PC in December 2014 before coming to PS4 and Xbox One a few years later in August 2016.
Assetto Corsa Competizione had a shorter gap: PS4 and Xbox One ports arrived in June 2020, 13 months after the PC original.
More recently, Assetto Corsa Competizione received PS5 and Xbox Series X|S ports boasting enhanced visuals and performance. Based on past ports, Assetto Corsa 2 may not arrive on consoles until 2025. Given that nearly 40% of Assetto Corsa’s sales were on consoles, it’s not surprising to learn that a console port is planned for the sequel.
Little is known about Assetto Corsa 2 other than the fact it will run on an in-house engine like the original – Assetto Corsa Competizione runs on Unreal Engine 4.
Based on the original game, Assetto Corsa 2 will have a stronger focus on road cars than Competizione’s GT3 racing, making it a direct competitor to Gran Turismo 7 and Forza Motorsport. We’re also hoping the sequel will feature dynamic weather like Competizione.
A new Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport challenger
When Assetto Corsa 2 arrives on consoles, Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport will finally have a new challenger. With Rennsport also heading to consoles, hardcore sim racers will no longer be restricted to PC.
That said, Kunos is a smaller team than Polyphony Digital and Turn 10, so don’t expect Assetto Corsa 2 to match the scope of Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport in terms of car and track numbers. But based on the Italian studio’s track record, Assetto Corsa 2's driving physics will be best in class on consoles.
