F1 23 gameplay features deep dive drops
Last week saw the official announcement of F1 23, but now EA has given a deeper dive into the headline features.
Narrated by Sky Sports F1 presenter Natalie Pinkham, the video highlights F1 23's "more predictable and authentic vehicle behaviour" physics for acceleration, braking and rotation. A comparison between F1 22 and F1 23 also shows off the new PrecisionDrive technology for pad players.
Red flags are also demonstrated. The system will monitor track conditions to determine whether to deploy a safety car, virtual safety car or red flag stopping the race. Red flags can be triggered by crashes, cars retiring in unsafe positions on track, or even extreme rain.
The new Las Vegas circuit joining the 2023 calendar is also showcased, built from the ground up from thousands of reference photographs for F1 23.
Next week, another deep dive will drop this time focusing on Braking Point 2 and F1 World on 19 May.
F1 23 release date confirmed
EA has finally lifted the covers off F1 23, confirming the release date.
In a surprise move, F1 23 is arriving a few weeks early: mark your calendars for 16 June. As before, players who pre-order the Champions Edition can access F1 23 three days early on 13 June.
Codemasters also confirmed that Braking Point with Aiden Jackson and Devon Butler returning from F1 2021. This time, you'll be racing for the fictional Konnersport Racing team with Butler as your teammate.
Codemasters is also promising improved physics with "more predictable" car handling and "greater realism to pad-play." Red flags finally return for the first time since F1 2014, while the divisive F1 Life is being replaced with a new hub called F1 World.
The new Las Vegas street circuit will join the calendar at launch along with Qatar and three legacy circuits: Paul Ricard (France), Shanghai (China), and Portimao (Portugal).
F1 23 release date
Formula 1 games normally have a late June/early July release window, but when does F1 23 come out?
Last year's title hit shelves on 1 July, with F1 2021 arriving on 16 July. There was some early access for players, but these were the official release dates.
The reveal trailer confirms the F1 23 release date is set for 16 June. This is earlier than usual so fans won't have to wait as long as previous games. Hopefully this isn't an indication that F1 23 will be glitchy like last year's game if it's rushed out earlier.
Players who pre-order the Standard Edition will receive the F1 World Starter Pack and 5000 PitCoin as bonuses.
Early access
Like last year's game, players who pre-order the Champions Edition can access the game earlier than this date.
The F1 23 Champions Edition lets you get behind the wheel on 13 June.
As well as three days early access, you also get an array of bonus content including time-limited Las Vegas content, Max Verstappen Race Wear Pack, Braking Point 2 Icons and Vanity Item Pack, Dual Entitlement, four new My Team Icons, an XP Boost, F1 World Bumper Pack, and 18,000 PitCoin.
Ahead of the release, EA is inviting fans to play F1 23 early in a closed beta and provide feedback to improve the final game.
Platforms and price
In terms of platforms, F1 23 is launching on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC via EA App, Epic Games Store, and Steam.
It may come as a surprise that F1 23 isn't abandoning last-gen platforms like Need for Speed Unbound, but these systems still have large player bases.
Now that the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles are more readily available, we expect F1 24 to be current-gen only. This will hopefully mean next year's game will run on a brand new engine to take advantage of the more powerful hardware.
In terms of pricing, the Standard Edition will set you back £59.99/$69.99, while the Champions Edition retails for £79.99/€89.99 on Steam. Console prices are to be confirmed.
