One thing that holds back Gran Turismo is its PlayStation exclusivity, much like Forza on Xbox.
Fortunately, retro Gran Turismo PS1 and PS2 titles can be played on PC through emulation. But what if you want to play more modern titles like Gran Turismo 7?
Here's everything you need to know about downloading Gran Turismo for PC and playing the latest releases!
How to Download Gran Turismo for PC
First of all, Gran Turismo is still a PlayStation exclusive, so no official versions are available for PC, despite rumours of a Gran Turismo 7 PC port.
However, there are certain ways in which you can get Gran Turismo to work on your PC. Bear in mind that these versions aren't natively made for PC.
The easiest way to do this is through remote play. It really is as simple as it sounds. Simply set up remote play in your PlayStation 5 console by going to Settings > System > Remote Play and turning on Enable Remote Play.
You'll then need to download and install the PS Remote Play app to play Gran Turismo on PC and buy a copy of Gran Turismo 7 if you don't have the game already.
Here are the PC system requirements for remote play:
- OS: Windows 10 or Windows 11
- Processor: 7th Generation Intel® Core™ processors or later
- Storage space: 100 MB or more
- RAM: 2 GB or more
- Display resolution: 1024 × 768 or higher
- Sound card: Required
- USB port: Required
You can use a DualSense or DualShock 4 controller for Remote Play with your PS5 console.
Downloading and playing Gran Turismo remotely opens up new ways to enjoy racing games. Similarly, a casino with BankID without Spelpaus provides seamless access to gaming without the self-exclusion restrictions of Spelpaus.
PC emulator
The other way to play Gran Turismo on PC is to use an emulator to play older titles.
The one thing holding back emulators is the fact that they generally only work with older titles.
However, for those looking to play titles like Gran Turismo 4, then an emulator is the easiest way to go. We use emulators a lot, and they're awesome fun!
Will Gran Turismo 7 ever come to PC?
Gran Turismo 7 launched in March 2022 for PS5 and PS4. Since the series began in 1997, Gran Turismo has been a PlayStation-exclusive franchise. This means historically speaking, Gran Turismo 7 is unlikely to come to PC.
However, PlayStation Studios has expanded into other types of media outside of PS systems. First-party Sony titles like Spider-Man, God of War, Uncharted and The Last of Us Part 1 have all been re-released on PC.
There have also been films produced from PS Studios in recent years, including Uncharted and Gran Turismo itself. We can't forget about the critically acclaimed The Last of Us TV show, either.
Most of the PlayStation games that have made the jump to PC, though, are originally PS4 titles, as Sony won't want to detract from its PS4 and PS5 sales.
Even the heavily rumoured PC re-release of The Last of Us: Part II would still count as a PS4 game, as the title was originally launched on this console.
It will likely be years until we see the likes of God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon: Forbidden West and other PS5 originals on PC and GT7 is firmly in this camp.
If a PC version of GT7 is released. it will have all of the incredible high specs that we see with its PS5 version. That means 4K resolution graphics, ray tracing, 60 FPS refresh rate, and top-quality sound will all be available.
When could GT7 come to PC?
So, things could be about to change with Gran Turismo, as for it to directly compete with Forza, it must make the transition to PC. While GT has never been released on PC, it's a possibility in the future.
Speaking with Japanese media, Kazunori Yamauchi said he is considering bringing Gran Turismo 7 to PC, but a PC port is not currently in development.
So, how long would a PC port take to make from a PS5 game? That's very difficult to answer, but the fact GT7 is on PS5 helps, as gaming PCs are generally around the same as a PS5 in terms of performance.
Still, though, GT7 is a huge game and completing a port that meets Polyphony's quality standards would likely take upwards of a year or two.
A benefit to a future PC version though, is that it would contain all of the content on GT7 on PS5 at the time of its release. That means if GT7 releases on PC in 2025 or 2026 it will have more cars, races and tracks than the original 2022 release.
