Assetto Corsa Evo is right around the corner, with the track racer set to take the sim racing world by storm. As the sequel to Assetto Corsa, fans will no doubt compare the two titles to see how the successor matches up.
One aspect that will be up for comparison will be modding support. Assetto Corsa has cultivated a strong modding community over the years, so will Assetto Corsa Evo also have mod support?
Custom racing
One aspect of Assetto Corsa that makes it stand out from its rivals is the modding community it has acquired over the years. As well as the tracks and cars created by developer Kunos Simulazioni, a wide range of vehicles, circuits, and environments have been added by the dedicated fanbase.
The extent of mods available changed the game from a simple track racer to a true driving simulator. Instead of blasting around Monza, players can now drive through a mountain pass, explore a dense city landscape or even race in a recreation of Rainbow Road.
Thanks to the modding community, you can also race around on lawnmowers, in buses, or in practically any type of vehicle you can think of. Assetto Corsa’s mods allow players to experience whatever form of driving they want, but what about its long awaited sequel?
Will Assetto Corsa Evo have mod support?
At the time of writing, Kunos Simulazioni has not confirmed if Assetto Corsa Evo will have mod support yet. If the game follows the path of spin-off Assetto Corsa Competizione (ACC), then fans won’t be able to add their own assets to the game.
ACC, however, utilizes the Unreal Engine, whereas the original Assetto Corsa uses an in-house engine. As it uses a custom engine built-in-house by Kunos Simulazioni and isn't restricted to a single racing discipline like Competizione, it's possible that Assetto Corsa Evo will have mod support, but we're still waiting for confirmation.
In a recent interview with Traxion.GG, Kunos Simulazioni hinted at what we can expect for mod support in Assetto Corsa Evo. Co-founder and executive manager Marco Massarutto revealed that “no decision has been made yet” regarding mod support for Assetto Corsa Evo, adding that it’s “definitely one of the open topics on the table.”
“Possibly, we may create a light editor like we did for the original Assetto Corsa so that people can contribute to content creation.” However, if Assetto Corsa Evo does support modding, it sounds like it will have more restrictions than before.
“What we want to prevent this time is abuses in how some Assetto Corsa modding is being used because we don’t like to see stolen content from different sims,” Massarutto explained. “The vision behind modding is that it should let people express their talent and create their own content.”
Being able to race a lawnmower around the most realistic recreation of the Nordschleife is an experience every racer needs to try at least once - that or charging around the Mushroom Kingdon in a Lamborghini Huracan of course!
