Mercedes W14 car returns to black for F1 23

After a disappointing 2022, Mercedes-AMG is aiming to reclaim the Constructors Championship title in the 2023 F1 season with its new W14 car.

Unveiled at Silverstone by Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, the Mercedes W14 car we’ll be driving in F1 23 looks radically different to last year's car.

Back in black

In contrast to last year’s traditional silver livery, the Mercedes W14 car adopts a striking all-black appearance. Mercedes also raced in the black livery in the 2020 and 2021 seasons to support diversity.

Whereas the Red Bull RB19 looks identical to last year's car, the W14's bold and aggressive appearance will help Mercedes stand out on the grid.

The upper section is finished in a prominent matte black, but lower sections such as the wings are unpainted with exposed carbon fibre to reduce weight.

Hopefully, this weight reduction will help Lewis Hamilton secure his record eighth championship title following his worst-ever F1 season last year.

Once again, Hamilton will race alongside George Russell, who proved to be a star driver in his debut season with Mercedes last year, often beating Hamilton. Mick Schumacher will be a reserve driver.

Mercedes reverting back to the black livery used in championship-winning seasons is a strong signal of intent. “Our hopes and expectations are always to be capable of fighting for a World Championship. However, our competitors were very strong last year, and we are playing catch-up,” said Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team Team Principal & CEO, Toto Wolff.

“Racing at the front requires resilience, teamwork, and determination. We face up to every challenge, we put the Team first, and we will leave no stone unturned in the chase for every millisecond. This year, we are going all in to get back in front.”

F1 23 release date

You’ll be able to help Mercedes reclaim the title in F1 23. Codemasters’ latest F1 game hasn’t been announced yet, but we’re expecting it to be revealed around April going by last year’s game.

Codemasters’ annual F1 games usually release in the summer, so we’re expecting F1 23 to arrive in late June or early July
