Is Gran Turismo 7 VR compatible?

Gran Turismo is one of the most popular PlayStation racing games, but is Gran Turismo 7 VR compatible?

Virtual reality is revolutionising racing games. Playing a racing game with a virtual reality headset strapped to your face is an incredibly immersive experience, giving you an idea of what it’s like to drive some of the world’s fastest cars around iconic race tracks.

Many racing games are compatible with VR headsets, from Gran Turismo Sport to Project CARS 2 and Assetto Competizione. But what about Gran Turismo 7?

Is Gran Turismo 7 VR compatible?

Unfortunately, Gran Turismo 7 is not VR-compatible. But that will change soon.

During Sony's CES 2023 conference, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan announced that Gran Turismo 7 will be VR compatible when the PSVR 2 launches in February.

GT7 will get PSVR 2 support in a free update when the headset launches in February.

Since then, Polyphony has clarified that all cars and tracks will support VR. Split-screen won't be available, but online races will be playable in VR.

Gran Turismo 7 PSVR 2 gameplay

Gran Turismo 7 PSVR 2 gameplay was also showcased at the conference for the first time showing a Ferrari Vision GT racing around Road Atlanta.

Gran Turismo Sport also supported VR with the original PSVR support, but it was limited to races against one opponent and solo time trials.

The gameplay showcase is encouraging, confirming you can race against a grid of at least 12 cars on track unlike in GT Sport.

We would also love to see a Forzavista-style mode that lets you view Gran Turismo 7’s immaculately rendered car models and interiors in VR.

PSVR 2 release date

You'll need to wait until the PSVR 2 arrives before you can play GT7 in VR. PSVR 2's release date is set for 22 February.

You can preorder the headset from PlayStation Direct for £529.99/$549.99.

It's an undeniably steep cost - especially compared to its relatively affordable predecessor. You also need a PS5 to use PSVR 2, which ramps up the cost considerably if you don't have a console already.

These costs are justified, though. With its 4K resolution, HDR, and new Sense Controllers, PSVR 2's technology is a significant step up. It's also cheaper than an equivalent PC VR headset.
