Assetto Corsa 2 PS5: Will AC2 be on PlayStation 5?

A new Assetto Corsa title is on the way. Digital Bros, the parent company of 505 Games and Kunos Simulazioni, has confirmed that Assetto Corsa is getting a sequel. But is Assetto Corsa 2 coming to PS5?

With the astronomical success of Assetto Corsa Competizione, a new AC title was a matter of time. Sim racing fans are limited to Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport on consoles, but this will finally change when Assetto Corsa 2 arrives.

Latest news: Assetto Corsa 2 "is not just a sequel," says Kunos Simulazioni

While Assetto Corsa 2 has yet to be unveiled, Kunos Simulazioni is setting player expectations high for the sequel, hinting that it's "not just a sequel."

“The new Assetto Corsa is going to follow what we did with Assetto Corsa ‘1,’” Kunos Simulazioni’s executive manager, Marco Massarutto, said in a recent interview.

While he didn’t reveal any further details, he teased that “it is not just a sequel, it is much, much, more. It’s definitely not a spin-off like Competizione.”

Assetto Corsa 2 delayed to Summer 2024

Originally set for a Spring 2024 release, Assetto Corsa 2 has been pushed back until Summer 2024. This was confirmed in a press release by Digital Bros, the parent company of Kunos Simulazioni and 505 Games. Kunos

Simulazioni was aiming to release Assetto Corsa 2 within the next fiscal year ending July 2024. This means it should arrive in June or July 2024. 

PS5 players may have to wait longer to play Assetto Corsa 2, however. The Summer 2024 release window only applies to the PC Early Access release, so Assetto Corsa 2 may not come to PS5 until late 2024 or sometime in 2025.

Assetto Corsa 2 PS5

Digital Bros' financial report confirms that Assetto Corsa 2 is heading to consoles. While a PS5 release is yet to be confirmed, Assetto Corsa 2 will almost certainly launch on Sony's current-gen console. On PS5, Assetto Corsa 2 should run at 4K and 60fps, but Kunos has yet to confirm this.

A PS4 is unlikely as Kunos will want to take full advantage of the current-gen consoles to deliver the best possible graphics and physics.

Sony is leading the console race this generation and the PS5 will still be popular for years to come. What is less certain, however, is the release date.

Release date

While the PC version is slated for a Summer 2024 release, the console versions of Assetto Corsa 2 are planned for the "long term." This implies the PS5 version will launch after the initial PC release.

This isn't unusual though as console ports of past games have arrived at least one year after the initial PC release. Looking back at the original game, Assetto Corsa was released on PC in December 2014 before coming to PS4 and Xbox One a few years later in August 2016.

Assetto Corsa Competizione, on the other hand, was ported to PS4 13 months after the initial PC release before coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2022.

As a result, we expect Assetto Corsa 2 to arrive on PS5 in late 2024 or sometime in 2025.

New engine

Not much else is known about Assetto Corsa 2 at this stage. What we do know, however, is that Assetto Corsa 2 will be built on a brand-new in-house engine rather than Unreal Engine 5.

This was also the case for the original game but not Assetto Corsa Competizione, which utilises Unreal Engine 4.

Will Assetto Corsa 2 rival Gran Turismo 7?

We also expect Assetto Corsa 2 to focus on road cars as well as thoroughbred racing cars. This means the car roster will have more variety than Assetto Corsa Competizione, which only includes GT racing cars, allowing Assetto Corsa 2 to compete with Gran Turismo 7.

Kunos is a smaller team than Polyphony Digital, so we're not expecting Assetto Corsa 2 to match Gran Turismo 7's car and track numbers. But based on the Italian studio’s track record, Assetto Corsa 2's driving physics will be best in class on consoles.
