Latest news: Need for Speed Unbound Vol. 7 Out Now!

It's now been 20 years since Need for Speed: Underground 2 was released and NFS: Unbound developers Criterion are getting in on the nostalgia with three Underground-inspired game modes in Volume 7.

Both Drift and Drag are in Volume 7, as is a new League progression system that will shake up the NFS: Unbound gameplay.

Drift Mode is tailor-made for those who prefer to get sideways around corners rather than stick to the racing line.

Drag Mode brings a fresh approach to competition where the thrill comes from manual gear shifts, strategic lane changes to dodge obstacles and perfectly timed nitrous boosts.

Drag & Drift Underground

EA's Year 2 roadmap confirms that Volume 7 will be the first to bring back classic game modes from previous Need for Speed games.

Taking elements of Need for Speed: Underground is the focus of Volume 7, with drift and drag racing set to take Lakeshore City by storm.

With drag racing absent in the game at launch, many fans were upset to see a Need for Speed staple missing. Volume 7 rectifies that with the Drift & Drag update adding an element of Olympic City to Unbound.

Drift events were already present in the game, but Volume 7 has added new Playlists for this mode in PVP and Free Roam.

Underground street racing is the main theme of Need for Speed: Unbound, so adding impromptu drag racing to the game was always going to be the next logical step.

New League System

The new League system revives the competitive spirit of Underground by adding the ability to challenge rivals to head-to-head battles for a chance to win their unique rides.

This feature harkens back to the pink slip events that many fans loved playing a couple of decades ago.

There's also a new community challenge that requires a collaborative effort to unlock the final boss and claim a new custom.

New Cars

Vol. 7 adds several new rides to Need for Speed Unbound's car list including the fully customizable Ford Mustang Dark Horse ‘24 and BMW M3 Competition Touring ‘23.

Keeping the Underground theme are new themed PVP playlists starring Eddie's Skyline and Rachel's 350Z. Premium Speed Pass owners can also unlock Melissa's Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Speed Pass

Just like previous Need for Speed: Unbound updates, a new volume means a new Speed Pass, which brings 45 tiers of unlockable customization options.

Multiple body kits for the BMW M3 Competition Touring ‘23 and XP Boosts can be unlocked, which will accelerate Rank and Speed Pass progression.

The Year 2 roadmap confirmed that Volume 7 would run between May and July and Criterion later confirmed that Unbound's Vol. 7 update would launch on Tuesday, May 21.

This is in line with previous updates, which were released on the last Tuesday of the month after Volume 6 launched on February 27. Volume 7 will run for three months until July.
