Now, a famous pop star and Fast & Furious actor have signed up for the Gran Turismo movie adaptation.

Gran Turismo movie cast grows with ex-Spice Girl plus Fast & Furious actor

According to Hollywood Reporter, Geri Halliwell-Horner has joined the Gran Turismo movie cast. Halliwell-Horner is of course best known as Ginger Spice in the Spice Girls, one of the best-selling pop groups of all time with over 100 million records sold.

It’s an interesting casting choice given her limited number of on-screen acting credits beyond the 1997 Spice World movie. She also had a cameo role in Crank: High Voltage.

Being married to former racing driver and Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner likely played a part in her landing a role in the Gran Turismo movie.

Also joining the Gran Turismo movie cast with Halliwell-Horner is Djimon Hounsou, who recently appeared in the horror flick A Quiet Place II. The two-time Academy Award-nominated actor has appeared in a car-focused film before, however, with his role as Mose Jakande in Fast & Furious 7.

Halliwell-Horner and Hounsou will play the parents of a teenager played by Archie Madekwe who wins a Gran Turismo esports competition and becomes a professional racing driver for Nissan.

German actor Thomas Kretschmann, Naomi star Daniel Puig and Josha Stradowski (Amazon’s Wheel of Time) will also play roles in the Gran Turismo movie according to Hollywood Reporter.

The narrative appears to mirror the real-life GT Academy competition and is expected to retell Jann Mardenborough’s journey from gamer to real-life Le Mans racer.

Release date

Directed by District 9’s Neill Blomkamp, the Gran Turismo movie is revving up for an 11 August 2023 theatrical release date. Shooting is currently underway in Hungary, so we’ll hopefully get to see a trailer soon.
