Forza Horizon 5 is incredibly popular, featuring a diverse open-world set in Mexico, hundreds of cars, and accessible arcade-style driving. But Forza started as a realistic racing game as Microsoft’s answer to Gran Turismo on the Xbox.

The first Forza Motorsport game launched back in 2005 on the original Xbox and spawned six sequels, with the last game in the series, Forza Motorsport 7, launching in 2017 on Xbox One. That means it's been five years since the last Forza Motorsport game.

Forza Motorsport is being hailed as a "reimagining of the series."

Thanks to the horsepower of Xbox Series X, Forza Motorsport will run at 4K and 60fps. Ray-tracing technology will also make the lighting and shadows more realistic, with car surfaces reflecting off each other.

In contrast to Forza Horizon 5’s arcade-style handling, Forza Motorsport will also boast a brand new tyre model, bringing new levels of driving realism.

Game Pass

Microsoft has confirmed Forza Motorsport will release on Xbox Game Pass. Presumably, it will be available on Game Pass on day one.

Will Forza Motorsport release on Xbox One?

As for other platforms, Forza Motorsport has been announced for PC. Microsoft hasn’t confirmed if it will also release on Xbox One. However, leaked screenshots were reportedly sourced from an early alpha build running on Xbox One, implying that Forza Motorsport will be a cross-gen release.

If it releases on Xbox One, we expect Forza Motorsport will be capped at 1080p and 30fps. Ray-tracing will likely be removed too as the technology will be too intensive on the less powerful Xbox One hardware.

Release date

There is no release date for Forza Motorsport yet. When it was announced, Forza Motorsport was still in early development, with no estimated release date. Nearly two years on, Microsoft and Turn 10 have remained silent about the release date.

We’re hoping Microsoft will break the silence and fully reveal Forza Motorsport at the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022 streaming on 12 June. With Gran Turismo 7 dominating game sales, Microsoft and Turn 10 need to show off their new vision for Forza Motorsport sooner rather than later.

With all that in mind, we expect Forza Motorsport to release in September 2022 at the earliest. An October release is also possible as Forza Motorsport 7 was released in October 2017.
